Georgia Couple Buys A Farmhouse Not Knowing Someone Already Lives There

Emily Dylan and feral cats

I still remember the excitement of moving into the first apartment my husband and I shared.

Having a place of our own felt thrilling, and we were delighted to discover the previous owner had left behind a lamp. A free lamp, what could be better?

Emily and Dylan’s story brings back that same feeling of surprise and joy, but in their case, the unexpected gift that came with their new home was far more special than a lamp.

When Emily and her partner Dylan bought a farmhouse, their dream was to transform it into a safe haven for animals in need.

What they hadn’t realised was that the property was already serving as a sanctuary – home to sixteen feral cats who had taken shelter there.

The sweetest cat colony claimed the property long before Emily and Dylan came into the picture. As Dylan said in his video:

“The realtor said they don’t really think they can catch the cats, is it gonna be a dealbreaker? And I said ‘No’.”

The former owners had been feeding the cats in the old barn, so Dylan and Emily chose to carry on the routine.

Each day, they set out food and spent time with the little colony in their driveway. It didn’t take long for Emily to notice that a few of the cats weren’t truly feral at all.

Out in the backyard, Emily would sit beside them while they munched on their treats.

Little by little, she managed to sneak in a gentle scratch, and to her delight, the cats didn’t seem to mind one bit.

Emily began bringing out toys and a little catnip, and the ginger kitties had an absolute blast.

Still, she knew they needed more than just playtime – she wanted to give them proper shelter. It didn’t take her long to come up with a solution.

At the back of the house stood an old shed, and Emily saw the perfect opportunity. She decided to transform it into a cosy cat room, giving the colony a safe place to call their own.

With Dylan’s help, the shed was completely renovated, complete with a wall-mounted catwalk for the cats to enjoy.

Emily bought custom heated beds for every one of her feline friends, making it a safe haven! As Dylan shared:

“They absolutely love the cat room.”

Although they never owned cats before, Emily and Dylan fell in love with their new feline companions in no time. As Emily shared:

“When we first moved in, we were definitely overwhelmed by them. Now we look at them as part of our family.”

When they first moved in, the cats were somewhat afraid of them, scattering around whenever they tried coming close.

However, today the cats can’t wait for them to come home! As Emily also mentioned:

“I think the best part is just having that unconditional love that the cats have given us. It taught me a lot about just loving animals in the way that they deserve and want to be loved.”

Looking ahead, Emily hopes to welcome even more animals in need while continuing to give her sixteen cats the happiest life possible.

It’s inspiring to see the love and effort she and Dylan pour into caring for these sweet cats.
