Fierce-Looking Cat In Washington D.C. Hid The Sweetest Heart And One Family Knew Right Away
Meet Hagrid, better known to his fans as “Haggy Bear.” With his oversized frame, snaggletooth smile, and soulful black-cat stare, he’s impossible to forget once you see him.
Today, Hagrid is living a life filled with love and comfort, but getting there wasn’t easy. His journey required patience, a bit of luck, and a family willing to look past first impressions.

Before finding his forever home, Hagrid spent nearly two years waiting in a rural Maryland shelter. Though he was gentle and sweet, his large size and tough-looking features often made people hesitate, leaving him overlooked again and again.
But everything changed when a rescue group from Washington, D.C. came across his profile. They instantly fell in love with the big, misunderstood cat and were determined to help him find the life he deserved.
However, things almost didn’t go as planned. Another foster volunteer had initially planned to take Hagrid in, but backed out at the last minute, worried that his imposing size might intimidate the other cats.
Luckily, fate had other plans. The D.C. rescuers didn’t give up. They took Hagrid under their wing, and before long, he was on his way to the Playschool for Wayward Kittens, a loving foster home that would change everything.
Hagrid, The Gentle Giant

The moment Hagrid arrived, it became clear he was not the fierce feline people had assumed. Instead, he was calm, affectionate, and incredibly patient, a true gentle giant.
Within weeks, he’d bonded with the resident cats, Pokey and Dora, who had been cautious with new arrivals since losing their former feline friend. Then something magical happened.
“About 3 weeks into fostering him, Dora cozied up to him and asked for snuggles. She hadn’t done that with Pokey or any other foster since our last cat, Azzy, had passed away a year earlier. And that’s how we knew we had to adopt him.”
Hagrid quickly became part of the family, showering everyone, human and feline, with affection. But his kindness extended even further.
The Best Foster Dad A Kitten Could Have

Hagrid turned out to be a natural mentor to the foster kittens that came through the Playschool’s doors. He watched over them, kept them safe, and even taught them “how to be cats”, vital skills for little ones preparing for adoption.
“Within two weeks of arriving, Dora was snuggling her sweet self into his shaggy fur and Pokey was happily playing with him. Hagrid also took to our foster kittens immediately and was clearly meant to stay forever.”
While many people focus on adopting playful kittens, Hagrid’s story is a reminder of how rewarding it can be to adopt an adult cat.
“Hagrid is a WONDERFUL example of why it can be a really great idea to adopt an adult cat. When you adopt a kitten, you have no idea how their personality will change as they grow, but if you adopt an adult, their personality is already developed, and you know what you’re getting.”
Hagrid’s Happily Ever After

Hagrid’s foster family didn’t take long to realise he was home for good. They officially adopted him, making him part of the faculty at the Playschool for Wayward Kittens.
Every year, they now celebrate his “Haggaversary”, the day this loveable giant joined their family.
Today, Hagrid continues to welcome new kittens into his life. He’s especially gentle with those who arrive sick, scared, or in need of comfort, often cuddling them close as if to say, “You’re safe now.”

When he’s not caring for kittens or soaking up attention from his humans, Hagrid can usually be found kneading his blanket, earning his title as the “Happiest Biscuit-Maker” in town.
For those who can’t resist his charm, Hagrid has his very own Instagram, where fans follow his daily adventures, watch him mentor kittens, and admire his unmistakable snaggletoothed grin.
In the end, the cat who waited two years for love turned out to be the one teaching others what it truly means to care, a gentle giant proving that sometimes, the biggest hearts come wrapped in the fluffiest fur.
