Michigan Woman Adopts A Shelter Cat, Then Tries To Euthanize Her For The Most Shocking Reason

Anna hadn’t always known kindness. For a long time, life meant surviving one day at a time, searching for scraps, avoiding danger, and finding somewhere to rest her tired body.

By the time she finally made it to Michele’s Rescue in West Michigan, it was clear just how much she had been through. She was thin, worn out, and moved like every step took effort.

And then, not long after she arrived, just when she finally had a safe place to breathe, Anna surprised everyone. She gave birth to five tiny kittens.

Before long, an older woman visited Michele’s Rescue. She seemed charmed by Anna right away, and the connection appeared genuine.

The shelter staff were encouraged. They believed Anna had finally found her forever home.

Adoption papers were signed, with the usual agreement that if things didn’t work out, Anna would be returned safely to the rescue.

But just a few weeks later, the staff received a call from a local veterinary clinic, a call that left everyone horrified.

Anna’s new adopter had contacted the clinic and requested something unthinkable: she wanted Anna euthanized.

The reason stunned everyone. Anna’s only “crime” was climbing on the counter and the table. A completely normal behaviour for cats, a way for them to explore, to feel safe, and to be part of their home environment.

For this woman, though, Anna’s climbing on furniture was too much.

And instead of reaching out for help or honoring her adoption contract, she chose the most drastic option of all.

The rescue shared their outrage in a Facebook post:

“What kind of monster would do this to an innocent animal? To set an appointment not even 30 days after adoption to have an animal [euthanized] for jumping on the counters?”

Horrified by what could have happened, Michele’s Rescue stepped in immediately.

They rushed to the woman’s home, collected Anna, and brought her back to safety before it was too late.

When Anna returned to the shelter, she was still the same affectionate and trusting cat.

Her purrs and eager head nudges made it clear she still longed for human love, despite being so close to losing everything. Her resilience touched everyone around her.

Now, Anna is staying at the Kentwood PetSmart, waiting for her real chance: a family that will love her unconditionally and appreciate her sweet, gentle nature.

She may have been betrayed, but her spirit remains unbroken. She still greets people with warmth, proving that all she really wants is love and a safe place to call home.

Her story highlights the responsibilities that come with adoption. Some people see pets as disposable when challenges arise, forgetting that these animals rely on patience, understanding, and care, as the rescue explained:

“Monsters come in many different sizes, shapes and forms. In this case, it was a nice little old lady. Shameful…”

Adopting a pet isn’t just about bringing an animal home. It’s a lifelong promise, a commitment to protect and nurture a living being who depends on you.

Cats like Anna deserve compassion, not abandonment or cruelty. With the right family, she will finally know what it means to be safe, cherished, and truly home.
