Georgia Man Didn’t Want Geese On His Farm, Then One Goose Chose Him As His Flock
When a new farm owner reluctantly agreed to bring home two geese, he had no idea that one of them would refuse to act like a bird and become his clingiest, most loyal companion.
When starting a new life on a farm, most people have a strict plan for which animals they want to bring home. For one new farmer, ducks and geese were completely off the table.
He wanted absolutely nothing to do with the loud, feathery birds. But farm life has a funny way of changing a person’s mind when they least expect it.
Before he knew it, he was driving an hour away to pick up two unexpected additions to the family. He had no idea that one of these birds was about to turn his entire world upside down.
A Surprising Road Trip
The couple instantly agreed to take a pair of sibling geese home. They packed them into the car, completely unaware of the feathery chaos they were inviting into their lives.
On the ride back, one goose sat comfortably right in his girlfriend’s lap. The other, named Martini, rode safely in a box in the back under a towel.
At the time, the farm’s newest owners were told that the lap goose was a girl named Olive, and Martini was a boy. It didn’t take long for the couple to realize they had been given the exact opposite information.
"That actually ended up being reversed," Olive’s dad explained. Olive was a goofy, loud male right from the very beginning.
Breaking All The Rules
As the geese settled into their new home, it became incredibly clear that Olive was a little bit different than the rest of the flock. He simply refused to act like a normal bird.
Instead of wandering off to forage with his sister, Olive always wanted to be right next to his people. He was constantly hovering around the humans, watching their every move.
"Whenever I’m doing something, he’s like, ‘What are we doing?’" his dad shared. Anytime someone stepped outside, Olive would immediately follow them out into the yard.
He had his own strong opinions about how the day should go. If his humans wanted him to do something, Olive would simply do the exact opposite.
The Goose Who Hates Water
One of the most basic instincts of any waterfowl is a deep love for swimming. Olive, however, completely missed that memo.
If his dad gently tossed him into the pond to encourage him to swim, Olive would paddle right back to the shore. He would march up to his dad’s side and stand there as if to say he was perfectly fine on dry land.
"How are you bad at swimming and you’re a goose?" his dad joked. Olive also seemed to forget that he was equipped with a perfectly good set of wings.
Instead of flying, the chaotic bird preferred to sprint across the yard. He would get sudden bursts of energy, zooming around the grass exactly like an excited puppy.
An Unlikely Best Friend
Since Olive acted so much like a dog, it made perfect sense that his best friend on the farm was an actual canine. Max, the family’s large backyard security dog, quickly took the bird under his wing.
The two animals grew up together on the property, completely bypassing any tense introductory phases. They hit it off almost immediately, forming a bond that confused everyone who saw them.
Their relationship involved a never-ending saga of play fighting. Max was a massive, fluffy guardian, but he was always incredibly careful with his feathered little brother.
Olive, on the other hand, loved to test the big dog’s patience. He was completely fearless when it came to messing with his canine companion.
Attached At The Fur
The goofy goose was constantly pecking at Max, trying to initiate a wrestling match. Sometimes, Max would take off running across the yard with Olive literally attached to his fur.
"I always felt bad for Max, but he figured it out," his dad noted. Despite the chaotic play sessions, the two friends shared a deeply affectionate bond.
After a long day of roughhousing, the odd couple would settle down together in the grass. Olive would gently preen Max’s fur, and the two would happily snuggle up.
It was their way of showing that they were on the same team. Together, they proudly patrolled the farm as the ultimate backyard security duo.
A Sudden Change Of Loyalty
When Olive first arrived at the farm, he was undeniably a mama’s boy. He spent all of his time with the girlfriend, while Martini stuck closer to dad.
The couple happily accepted their respective geese, rolling with the sweet dynamic. But as Olive grew older, a massive shift took place in his little feathered heart.
The clingy goose suddenly decided that his dad was his absolute favorite person in the world. He abandoned his mama’s side and began following his dad everywhere he went.
"Now he wants to just stand and be with me," his dad said. No matter where the farmer was working on the property, Olive was guaranteed to be trailing right behind him.
The Loudest Shadow
The bond between the farmer and his goose became entirely unbreakable. If his dad called out his name, Olive would instantly call back and come running as fast as his webbed feet could carry him.
"I put money that my geese are going to find me first before my dog," his dad laughed. Olive would even patiently wait for his dad to finish his daily chores.
If the other geese were busy eating grubs, Olive would scream at them to come over and join his dad. He simply couldn’t understand why the rest of the flock preferred the pond over hanging out with their favorite human.
When Olive wanted attention, he made sure his dad knew it. He would nibble on the farmer’s clothes or shoes, demanding his daily head rubs.
A Permanent Porch Goose
Olive’s absolute refusal to act like a normal bird led to some hilarious situations. At one point, his dad found him with a large knot on his face, only to realize the goofy bird had managed to get stung by a bee while eating.
Through all the chaotic moments and toddler-like tantrums, Olive proved to be the cuddliest goose on the farm. If he felt ignored, he would loudly demand that someone pay attention to him.
His dad proudly declared him a permanent "porch goose." Whenever the farmer sat down to take a break, Olive was right there, waiting for affection.
"Olive changed my mind about geese," his dad smiled. The silly, fearless bird taught him to notice the little things in life, and he continues to make his dad smile every single day.
