Dog Rescued From California Streets Becomes The Perfect Hearing Aid For A Deaf Kitten

A Heartbreaking Start On The Streets

Before she ever knew the comfort of a soft bed, Joey was just trying to survive. She was a street dog in Guatemala, navigating a world that was often cruel and unforgiving.

When local rescuers finally pulled her off the streets at around four months old, she was in terrible shape. She was suffering from severe mange, had lost all her hair, and was incredibly sick.

Beyond her physical ailments, her spirit was broken. Rescuers told her future adopter that local children would throw rocks at the street dogs, leaving the young pup deeply terrified of kids.

Thankfully, a dedicated rescue group stepped in to change her fate. They spent weeks nursing the fragile puppy back to health, preparing her for a second chance at life.

A Journey To The Bay Area

Once Joey was physically healthy enough to travel, she was flown to the San Francisco Bay Area in California. It was a massive change of scenery for a dog who had only known the harsh streets.

"It’s a totally different relationship that they have than versus me and Joey," Wendy noted. Their bond is entirely their own.

Today, the dynamic duo prefers to spend their downtime laying around and snuggling. The wild play sessions of Bernie’s kittenhood have turned into peaceful, cozy afternoons.

Wendy is still amazed by Joey’s incredible transformation. The dog who was once terrified of the world is now a confident, loving protector.

"Rescue dogs are so adaptable," Wendy shared. "They can recover from so many different things… and turn out to be amazing companions."

Both Joey and Bernie had difficult beginnings, but they found ultimate comfort in each other. Thanks to a chance meeting in California, they will never have to face the world alone again.
