SaVanna McLaughlin always loved making her backyard look neat and inviting, but lately, there was something that kept disturbing the peace. Her loyal Lab Sandy had started digging near the fence.
At first, McLaughlin tried to ignore it, but Sandy kept digging under the fence for weeks.
No matter what she did, the dog wouldn’t stop, and McLaughlin couldn’t figure out why she was so determined to do this.
Then, one day, as McLaughlin walked outside to tell Sandy off again, she was met with an unexpected sight, sharing in an interview:
“[T]o my surprise, I see the cutest little white paw just waving through my fence.”
It was then that she realized Sandy wasn’t just digging for no reason – she was trying to meet the neighbor’s cat.
For weeks, the two had been bonding from opposite sides of the fence, and Sandy just couldn’t stand the separation anymore. It was clear that the fence wasn’t enough to stop their growing connection.
McLaughlin didn’t realize it at the time, but Sandy was digging with purpose, she badly wanted to befriend this kitty.
Then one night, while McLaughlin was sound asleep, something startled her awake. She heard a tap on the window which made her heart race, as she shared:
“I was so scared, like paralyzed in my bed.”
Terrified, she pulled the curtains open, who could it be at this hour? Trying to shake off the fear, she finally mustered the courage to pull back the curtains. What she saw took her by surprise.
A little white cat had pressed her small face against the glass, looking up at McLaughlin with those wide, curious eyes. It was Bitty Kitty, the same cat who had been waving her paw through the fence just days before.
To McLaughlin’s surprise, Sandy joined her, pressing her head against the window too, as she shared:
“I opened up the curtains and there is this little cat who’s got her head up against the window. And right after I opened the curtains, Sandy put her head against the window.”
The sight of both of them there, together, was more heartwarming than anything McLaughlin could have imagined. The cat kept coming back each night, and after a few visits, McLaughlin decided it was time to let them meet properly.
When she brought Bitty Kitty inside, the connection was instant. It was like they’d known each other forever, as McLaughlin put it:
“When I brought the cat inside, it was literally like they knew each other from another lifetime.”
Sandy and Bitty Kitty immediately snuggled up to each other. The little cat even started making biscuits on Sandy’s belly, as if this was the most natural thing in the world.
McLaughlin learned that Bitty Kitty was her neighbor’s rescue cat, whom this woman adopted after being abandoned as a kitten.
Bitty Kitty already shared her some with a Lab named Daisy, so she was no stranger to dogs.
But Sandy had never interacted with a cat before, so McLaughlin was amazed at how quickly they became friends, sharing:
“I was so surprised. [They] went from waving in the fence to tapping on the window to, ‘Okay, we’re best friends.’”
At that moment, McLaughlin realized that her dog had been longing for a friend and this kitty was exactly what Sandy had needed all along.
Sandy and Bitty Kitty have become the best of friends and they are inseparable. Bitty Kitty stops by the McLaughlin home daily, while Sandy heads to her neighbor’s house for regular playdates.
Their unexpected friendship shows that no matter how strong the barriers may seem, true connections always have a way of breaking through.
Their bond, formed despite the fence that separated them, truly proves that when something is meant to be, nothing can stand in the way!
