One day, Jordyn and Derek Slack were greeted by an unexpected surprise when they opened the door to their Tennessee home.
On their porch stood a little Boxer puppy, looking lost and broken. The moment he looked at them, they knew they had to do something. He had no one else, and somehow, he knew he could trust them.
It was a heartbreaking sight – he was so thin, weak, and vulnerable. He clearly needed help, his big eyes pleading for someone to save him.
Jordyn immediately bent down to pet him, offering him comfort in the only way she knew how. They gave him food and water and called the local shelter to get him the help he desperately needed.
Soon, the rescuers arrived and took the pup to a vet, where it was discovered that Jack – his new name – wasn’t microchipped, and no one seemed to be looking for him.
The Slack family tried to find his original owners by posting on social media, but no one came forward.
Jack seemed like he hadn’t been on the streets long, as he wasn’t dirty and didn’t have any ticks or fleas. He must have been cared for at some point, which gave them some hope that his story might have a happy ending.
When the shelter asked if they could foster Jack for the weekend, the Slacks didn’t hesitate to welcome him into their home. They did everything they could to help Jack feel safe, loved, and cared for.
It didn’t take long for Jack to settle in, though he spent a lot of time resting and recovering from his difficult start.
It was clear from the start that Jack had formed a special bond with the family’s daughter, Baylor. The two became inseparable, cuddling up together like they’d known each other forever.
It was beautiful to watch as Jack followed Baylor everywhere she went, and she loved him just as much in return, as Jordyn shared in a TikTok video:
“He has really taken up with our ten-year-old daughter Baylor. They are the best of friends. I think he has found his person. He follows her everywhere she goes… He loves and she really loves him…”
But as much as the family wanted to welcome Jack into their home for good, there was a problem: their French Bulldog didn’t get along with him.
The two dogs couldn’t be in the same room without fighting, which made it impossible for the family to keep Jack.
It was a heartbreaking decision, but they knew it was what was best for Jack. They couldn’t return him to the shelter, though. They were determined to find him the loving home he deserved.
Not long after, a wonderful couple reached out, wanting to adopt him. They were experienced with Boxers and had recently lost their own, and with their retirement, they had the time and love to give Jack the life he deserved.
When Jack met his new family, it was clear he had found his people. Jordyn knew it was the perfect fit for him, sharing on TikTok:
“As soon as the lady sat down, he jumped up in her lap and was licking her on the face. It was really sweet and they were so excited.”
Though the Slacks miss Jack, they find comfort in knowing that he is in a home where he’ll be cherished and adored.
And the best part? Jack still lives in Athens, Tennessee, so Baylor can visit him anytime and maintain their special bond.
It may have been hard to let go, but the Slacks know it was the right thing to do for Jack’s future.
