Tonka and Little P were brothers, best friends, and the center of their little world. And at the heart of that world was their human, Kris.

Every day was spent side by side, exploring, playing, and simply enjoying life together.

But everything changed on a hiking trip in Colorado when Kris and the pups got lost in the wilderness.

After two long days with no food or water, Kris attempted to climb down a steep canyon. The terrain was treacherous, and he slipped. All three tumbled to the bottom.

Kris didn’t survive. Miraculously, Tonka and Little P did, but both were injured.

Tonka broke both front legs and couldn’t walk, yet the brothers stayed by Kris’s side, refusing to leave even after his heart had stopped.

When rescuers finally arrived, Little P refused to leave Tonka’s side. As Tonka was lifted onto a stretcher, Little P jumped up next to him.

He licked his face and clung tight. It was a scene that broke hearts.

The following weeks were incredibly challenging. Tonka needed major surgery and full casts, and the brothers had to be separated for the first time in their lives.

Tonka went to a foster home, while Little P stayed with Kris’s cousin, Crysti, and her boyfriend.

In a YouTube video, Crysti shared how the two brothers seemed to understand the separation:

“They were kissing each other, and it was like they were saying, ‘I’ll see you on the other side of this, it’ll be okay.’”

Both pups were lost without each other and without Kris. Tonka, the more expressive of the two, howled when he felt alone, calling out for his dad and brother.

But Crysti and the rescue team at Mr. Bones & Co. were determined to help them heal.

Through love and patience, Tonka and Little P slowly regained trust and confidence. They began walking again, wagging their tails, and snuggling into cuddles.

Once ready, the rescue team focused on finding a forever home where the brothers could stay together.

They wanted a family that would be devoted to the pups just like Kris had been, as Crysti shared:

“We needed someone who would give them a similar life to what my cousin did, a life full of adventures and outdoor activities.”

Over 200 people applied to adopt Tonka and Little P. After careful consideration, one couple, Brandon and Heilea, stood out.

Their active, outdoor lifestyle mirrored the life Kris had given the boys, and Crysti knew they were the perfect fit, sharing:

“I knew that we had finally found the perfect family.”

Adoption day was also reunion day. When the brothers finally saw each other again, it was as if no time had passed at all.

Kris’s whole family watched as Tonka lifted his head and howled, with Little P joining in. Crysti shared:

“It was such an emotional experience because it really felt like they were singing out to Kris.”

From that day on, the boys had a loving home. They went on hikes, lounged in the sun, and snuggled each night, safe and cherished.

Tonka lived out his remaining years to the fullest before crossing the rainbow bridge, leaving behind a family grateful for the time they had with him.

Little P still feels the loss of his brother, but Tonka’s memory lives on in their hearts every day.
