San Diego Family Makes Huge Mistake That Nearly Costs Their Dog’s Life

Sometimes, we don’t realize that a simple choice we make for our pets can unintentionally put their lives at risk.
That’s exactly what happened to Petunia, a sweet 2-and-a-half-year-old bulldog who had been quietly suffering.
A cone meant to protect her ended up causing a deep, infected wound that threatened her life.

Her home on a reservation near San Diego wasn’t safe for her anymore. The people caring for her either didn’t notice the damage or didn’t know how serious it had become.
Days turned into weeks, and Petunia’s condition worsened until help finally came.
The Helen Woodward Animal Center’s Pets Without Walls team came by with their mobile rescue van, a service designed for pets and families who don’t have easy access to veterinary care.
That day, a concerned neighbor pointed them toward Petunia, and the team immediately recognized the seriousness of her situation.

When the rescuers saw her, their hearts sank. Petunia’s neck was covered by a deep, raw wound hidden beneath layers of infection.
The cone, which had been left on far too long, had turned into a nightmare. The gauze tie had cut deeply into her skin, and the injury was full of dirt, infection, and even maggots.
It was clear Petunia had been neglected for quite a while.
Her owners were guided to understand the severity of her injuries and thankfully agreed to let the team take her for care. Petunia was rushed into emergency surgery.

The wound was so extensive that tendons were visible, making the procedure one of the most challenging Dr. Olivia Garvey had ever seen, as shared in the rescue’s Facebook post:
“Petunia’s cut was deep, all the way through multiple layers of skin down to raw areas – we could see the tendons of her neck, it was close to almost being decapitating.”
Hours of cleaning, stitching, and careful medical attention later, Petunia pulled through.
Without the swift response of the rescuers and medical team, that deep, infected neck laceration could have been fatal.

Now, Petunia is resting and healing, finally receiving the love she’s always deserved.
She’s showing her true strength and resilience every day, and soon, she’ll be ready to start fresh with a family who will shower her with cuddles, belly rubs, and all the affection she’s been missing.
While Petunia’s story ends on a hopeful note, it’s a reminder of the countless pets who still need help. Many families on reservations lack access to affordable vet care or even ways to report animal neglect or cruelty.
Programs like Pets Without Walls bring critical support directly to those in need, giving animals like Petunia a much-needed second chance.
