Atlanta Man Wanted Puppy Euthanized For Being Deaf And Blind, But Look At Her Now

For as long as she can remember, Haley Ray, a chiropractor living in Atlanta, has loved animals.
But she never could have imagined that one puppy would end up teaching her just how deep that love could go.
It all started when Haley came across a heartbreaking photo online. In it, a man holding two puppies he had taken to the vet, planning to put them down.
In his eyes, their lives weren’t worth saving. Thankfully, the vet thought otherwise.

Instead of following through, the vet reached out to Speak Rescue and Sanctuary, hoping someone would step up for the little ones.
That’s how Haley first learned about Kona, a deaf and partially blind pup whose life had been spared that day.
When Haley met her for the first time, Kona was unbelievably tiny, delicate as a puff of cotton.
And yet she’d already carried more struggles than most dogs face in a lifetime.

The moment Haley lifted her up and cradled her, the puppy curled against her chest and drifted to sleep.
In that instant, Haley knew she wasn’t just fostering a dog; Kona was meant to be hers.
Kona had a beauty all her own. As Haley described in a YouTube video:
“She is the most beautiful dog I’ve ever seen in my entire life. She has a left blue eye, and her right eye is half Hazel, half blue.”

But it wasn’t only her striking appearance that made her special. It was her soul. Kona radiated joy and gave her love freely to everyone she met.
When she joined Haley’s household, she wasn’t stepping into an empty home. Buddy and Nala, Haley’s two older dogs, already shared a strong connection.
Even so, Kona slipped into their little pack with ease, bringing fresh energy and excitement. The older dogs welcomed her as though she had always belonged.
Sometimes Haley still thinks about the man who once decided Kona’s life wasn’t worth living. The thought lingers, frustrating and sad.

She wishes she could show him what became of the puppy he was ready to throw away: a thriving, happy dog who is now the heart of her family.
Despite her disabilities, Kona is exceptionally smart. With the help of touch signals, Haley and her family found ways to communicate with her.
To their amazement, Kona picked up the cues quickly and mastered trick after trick. As Haley proudly shared:
“We use touch signals with her. She knows almost every single trick my 12-year-old Border Collie knows.”

What was even more incredible, Buddy and Nala began to recognize the hand signals, too, joining in on the communication.
Kona’s limited vision doesn’t keep her from enjoying life to the fullest.
When the dogs play fetch, she can’t always follow the ball, but she follows her pack instead and chases them with the same enthusiasm.
And lately, Haley has noticed something even more remarkable: Kona’s vision seems to be improving. Little by little, she’s noticing things she couldn’t before.

One of the sweetest parts of Kona’s journey is the bond she shares with Nala. Their connection is tender and pure, as Haley shared:
“She loves Nala. She wants to play with her, but when she realizes that Nala’s done playing, she stops and just licks her over and over and over. It’s like telling her, ‘I know you’re done playing, but I still want to love you.’”
Every day, Kona proves that her challenges don’t define her. They only highlight her resilience and her enormous heart.
Haley believes every dog, no matter their needs, deserves the chance to live, to love, and to be loved in return. Kona is proof of that.
