Ohio Woman Spots A Tiny Hairless Creature In Her Yard And Makes A Life-Saving Move

You never know what little surprises might pop up in your yard, and for Kim, a woman from Cincinnati, Ohio, one ordinary morning turned into an unexpected rescue mission.

While walking through her grass, she noticed something tiny, pink, and wriggling. At first, she wasn’t sure what she was seeing. Leaning closer, her heart sank…

There, shivering on the ground, was a baby squirrel. His eyes were still shut, his skin completely bare, and he looked so fragile it was hard to believe he was alive at all.

Finding something that helpless was both shocking and heartbreaking. Kim could see right away that this little guy had fallen from his nest and needed help immediately if he was going to survive.

But instead of panicking, she kept calm and thought fast. She knew the goal: get him back to his mom as soon as possible.

Carefully, she scooped him up and placed him in a small bucket, securing it near the tree where she guessed his nest might be.

Then she reached out to WEST Wildlife Rehab (WWR) to let them know exactly what she had found.

The rehab team was thrilled to hear Kim had acted so quickly. They shared on Facebook:

“She knew it needed to be back with its mama, so she put it in a bucket and attached the bucket to the tree where the nest was, then texted WEST.”

However, a baby that small can’t regulate its own body temperature, which could lead to more issues, as the WWR explained:

“Eyes closed babies can’t thermoregulate and will get cold, and mamas will not take cold babies back to the nest.”

So, the wildlife team suggested using a warmed sock filled with rice as a mini heating pad, just in case. But when Kim went back outside to check, the bucket was empty. The baby squirrel was gone.

In the most perfect twist, his mama had returned while Kim was inside, scooped him up, and carried him safely back to the nest. No rice sock required.

You can only imagine the relief and joy Kim must have felt. That tiny, vulnerable life was back where it belonged, snuggled safely with his siblings.

For the WWR team, moments like this are why they do what they do. They handle countless wildlife cases every day, but what really lights them up is helping people bring animals back to their families.

The reality is, there just aren’t enough rehabbers to care for every animal in need. Often, the best rescue is simply returning a baby to its mom. The WWR shared:

“If you find a baby on the ground that looks healthy and is uninjured, call your nearest rehabber and they’ll talk you through what to do to get that baby back to the nest, where it belongs!”

Kim had gone from passerby to hero in her own backyard, and it didn’t take anything more than awareness, care, and a little faith in the natural world.

By staying calm, thinking quickly, and doing the right thing, she helped a fragile life survive and gave the squirrel a happy ending he deserved.
