Squeaky Screams Echoed Near New York Highway And This Man Knew He Had To Act Fast
Long Island rescuer John Debacker was out caring for his usual feral cat colony when he saw an urgent Facebook alert on his phone.
This wasn’t a routine concern. The person reaching out was panicked. Somewhere nearby, a tiny kitten was running out of time.

This wasn’t a case of a kitten tucked away in a parking lot or hiding under a bush. Instead, the tiny furball was stranded in the middle lane of a busy parkway.
Picture it – a fragile kitten surrounded by speeding cars, engines roaring, and horns blaring all around him.
Some drivers tried to help by slowing down and honking in an attempt to guide him off the road, but the frightened little one had no idea where to go.
At last, he managed to reach the side of the highway. By then, he was shaking, confused, and crying out in his raspy little voice, hoping someone would come to his rescue.

That someone ended up being John. He didn’t waste a second. In less than half an hour, John was at the parkway, scanning the roadside for the kitten.
Before long, he heard the screams, as he shared in a Facebook post:
“The kitten’s screams were so loud, they could be heard over the noise of the traffic.”
The person who’d called for help was already there, and together, they quickly came up with a game plan.

The kitten, however, had other plans. Each time someone tried to approach, he edged back toward the roadway, as if he thought that was the only way to escape.
John and his rescue partner quickly realised they needed to shield him from danger. They positioned themselves between the kitten and the traffic, creating a small zone of safety.
That’s when John pulled out his best tool – food. The moment the kitten caught the scent, his eyes lit up, and John seized the chance to scoop him into his arms.
In an instant, the struggle was over. The trembling stopped, and the tiny cat melted against John, as though he understood he was finally out of harm’s way.

There were no hisses or struggles. Instead, the kitten simply relaxed, as though the fear and chaos of the past hour had finally lifted from his tiny body.
Wanting to honour his ordeal and the place where his rescue began, John gave the brave little survivor a fitting name: Meadowbrook, after the parkway that had nearly taken him but instead became the start of his new life.
From there, Meadowbrook’s next stop was The Shabby Tabby Cat Cafe, a cozy mix of coffee shop and cat haven. There, visitors can meet adoptable kitties over a warm latte.

Today, Meadowbrook is thriving in his foster home. His days are filled with soft naps, playful chases after toys, and long stretches of sun-soaked lounging.
He’s safe now, surrounded by love, and waiting for the day his forever family finds him.
When that moment comes, they won’t just be bringing home a cat – they’ll be welcoming a little survivor, a brave kitten who once faced down a busy highway and lived to tell his story.
