After being shut out by a local cat colony, a gentle feline with a painful eye condition finds his way to an Arizona rescue and eventually, a first-class ticket to a new life.

Life on the streets is never easy, but it’s especially cruel when you are treated as an outsider by your own kind. For a gentle cat named Shrek, a local feline colony offered little comfort or safety.

Whether he had been abandoned or simply wandered into the area, the other cats quickly made it clear he didn’t belong. They refused to let him eat with the group, pushing him to the fringes.

To make matters worse, Shrek was battling a painful medical condition that severely limited his vision. Unable to see properly and struggling for basic nutrition, this sweet boy was desperately in need of a miracle.

Finding Sanctuary In Arizona

Thankfully, Shrek’s luck was about to change. One day, the battered cat was brought into the care of Emily Shields.

Emily runs Whiskers N Wishes Sanctuary in Arizona, a place dedicated to giving vulnerable animals a second chance. When she first met Shrek, it was clear he had experienced a very hard life.

He looked incredibly beat up and bore the scars of past fights. One of his ears didn’t even stand up properly anymore, a silent testament to the struggles he had faced outdoors.

The Pain Behind His Sleepy Eyes

Beyond his battle scars, Shrek had a very distinct, almost sorrowful face. He had large bags under his eyes that made him look like he was constantly asleep or incredibly tired.

The rescue team soon discovered the heartbreaking reason behind his sleepy expression. Shrek was suffering from entropion, a painful condition where the eyelids actually grow over and roll inward against the eyes.

This condition was the reason he couldn’t see properly while living with the colony. He needed medical intervention if he was ever going to live a comfortable, pain-free life.

A Life-Changing Surgery

Determined to help him, the sanctuary rallied their supporters. They successfully raised the money needed to get Shrek his much-needed eye surgery.

The procedure was designed to decrease the amount of excess eyelid tissue and pull it back into a normal position. The results were absolutely transformative.

Once his eyes were finally able to open properly, the rescue staff was in for a beautiful surprise. Shrek had absolutely stunning blue eyes that had been hidden away for far too long.

The Origin Of His Unique Name

As Shrek healed, his unique personality and appearance continued to charm everyone at the sanctuary. Like many male cats who grow up outdoors with high testosterone, he had developed large, squishy cheeks.

The person who originally found him thought his big cheeks and rugged face made him look like an oversized ogre. Because of this, she affectionately named him Shrek.

The rescue team thought the name was a perfect fit and decided to keep it. Emily, however, fondly jokes that she thinks he looks a bit like a potato.

A Long-Distance Love Connection

With his health restored and his beautiful blue eyes shining bright, it was time for Shrek to find a forever home. It didn’t take long for his story to capture the hearts of a special couple.

The couple lived all the way in New York City, but distance meant nothing to them. They saw Shrek and immediately knew he was the missing piece to their family.

Emily was absolutely amazed by their dedication. She couldn’t believe they were willing to travel all the way across the country just to adopt this special rescue cat.

When adoption day finally arrived, Shrek’s new dad flew out to Arizona to pick him up personally. He wanted to make sure his new best friend had the best trip possible.

To ensure Shrek was comfortable on the long flight to New York, his dad booked a first-class travel ticket. He wanted the sweet cat to have plenty of room to relax on his journey home.

Despite spending his life outdoors, Shrek adapted to indoor house life right away. As Emily noted, it’s a big change that many colony cats struggle with, but Shrek was simply always meant to be inside.

Learning To Look Up

Settling into his new New York City home came with a few quirky learning curves. Because of his severe eye condition, Shrek had never been able to look up before.

He had absolutely no concept of seeing things above him. His new family had to gently teach him about the vertical plane of existence, showing him a whole new world he had been missing.

Now that he can see clearly, his playful side has finally emerged. While he was too shut down to play at the rescue, he now spends his days happily playing in his forever home.

A Dog-Like Loyalty And A Lasting Legacy

Today, Shrek is living the life of luxury he always deserved. He absolutely loves human attention and has a deeply loyal personality that his rescuers say is more like a dog than a cat.

His journey has also left a lasting mark on Whiskers N Wishes Sanctuary. Shrek’s story brought so much attention to the rescue that they have been able to save many more cats in his honor.

Emily says she will never forget the battered, gentle giant who arrived at their doors that summer. Thanks to a dedicated rescue and a family willing to go the distance, Shrek finally got his happily ever after.
