Baby Deer Stuck In Muddy Pit Gets Saved By A Rescue Dog In Illinois

The sun was just starting to come up, but Dixie, a playful and curious pittie, was already wide awake and ready to go.
Her mom, Joni Hart, clipped on the leashes and off they went, with Dixie and her doggy brother Trigger, on their usual morning walk.
Their neighborhood was peaceful, nestled by a river and surrounded by trees. Birds, squirrels, and even the occasional owl or bald eagle were regular sights.
But this walk? It turned into something totally unexpected.

As they wandered down a familiar path, Dixie suddenly stepped and froze. Hart thought she was just sniffing something, so she gave the leash a tug to move along.
But Dixie wasn’t having it. She stood firm, looking at something in the dirt and glancing back at her mom with this urgent, pleading look.
It was like she was saying: “Please, just look. This is important.”
Hart finally gave in and crouched down to see what had her dog so concerned. That’s when she finally saw it.

At the bottom of a muddy pit was a tiny baby deer all alone, stuck, and completely helpless. It looked up with those big, confused eyes, and Hart’s heart just sank.
She didn’t want to scare the little one or make things worse, so she quickly led her pups back home, promising the fawn she’d be back soon. And she was.
When she returned, she spotted the mama deer peeking from behind a tree. But as soon as she noticed Hart, the deer dashed off into the woods.
Hart knew she needed help, so she called her friend Chilo, who had some experience rescuing wildlife. Not long after, he arrived with a rope and a calm approach.

The rescue was gentle and careful. Bit by bit, Chilo guided the little one out of the muddy trap and back onto solid ground, making sure not to scare her any more than she already was.
The second those tiny hooves touched freedom, the fawn bolted into the forest.
That evening, the neighbors spotted a heartwarming sight. The little fawn was walking side by side with her mama again, safe and sound.
And in the days that followed, they kept showing up. Every so often, Hart and her pups would see the pair, as if the deer were checking in with the friends who helped them.

Hart couldn’t be prouder of Dixie. This beautiful pittie, once rescued herself from It’s A Pittie Rescue in Peotone, Illinois, had just helped save a life.
She’s more than just a cuddle buddy or a goofy girl who likes to toss toys in the air and crash onto the couch for belly rubs. She’s got a heart as big as the sky.
Thanks to Dixie and her compassionate mom, a tiny fawn got a second chance, and a mama deer didn’t have to face the woods without her baby.
Who knew a rescue dog would turn out to be someone else’s hero, too?
