For one cat lover, bringing a new feline into the home was always a joyful experience. But she quickly realized that she had never met a cat quite like Buhbo.

Buhbo is a cat who demands to be the center of attention. If he feels ignored, he will cleverly find his way up to the kitchen cabinets just to make his presence known.

He even gets a little jealous if his family spends too much time looking at their phones. They happily give him attention all day long, but for Buhbo, it is simply never enough.

His family adores his quirky, affectionate personality. They are especially grateful for his loving nature, because for a long time, they worried his traumatic past would haunt him forever.

A Painful Secret

Before Buhbo found his forever family, he belonged to previous owners who made the decision to have him declawed.

Unfortunately, wherever they took him for the procedure, the veterinarian botched the surgery.

Buhbo was left in significant discomfort, silently enduring the consequences of the failed operation. He was clearly in some kind of pain that his owners didn’t know how to handle.

Unsure of what to do with a hurting cat, his previous family made the decision to surrender him to a local animal shelter.

The Shocking X-Ray

Once Buhbo arrived at the shelter, the observant staff quickly noticed that something was very wrong with his front paws.

They decided to run some medical tests to get to the bottom of his discomfort. When the veterinary team looked at his X-rays, they were stunned by what they found.

The imaging showed that all of his front paws still had bone fragments left behind from the initial botched declawing.

To relieve his suffering, the shelter had no choice but to put the sweet cat through a second, corrective declawing surgery.

A Skittish Arrival

It was shortly after this second surgery that Buhbo’s life finally took a turn for the better.

His new mom officially adopted him, bringing him into a quiet, safe environment where he could heal properly.

Unsurprisingly, the trauma of his past had left a deep mark on his spirit. When he first arrived at his new home, Buhbo was incredibly shy and skittish.

He would hide away, terrified of every sudden sound or unexpected movement in the house.

Learning To Trust

His new mom knew that patience was the only way to help him heal. She could tell that he was highly sensitive about his paws, carefully guarding them from the world.

Despite his deep-seated fears, Buhbo slowly began to realize that the gentle hands reaching out to him meant no harm.

He was actively trying to trust his new mom, taking small, brave steps toward building a bond.

Eventually, something inside of him clicked. He finally knew he was truly safe and that this family was never going to abandon him.

As Buhbo healed from his second surgery, a beautiful transformation began to take place.

Once he realized that his paws no longer caused him constant pain, his true, joyful personality emerged.

He started “making biscuits” with his front paws, a classic sign of feline contentment that he hadn’t been able to do comfortably before.

Soon, he was running around the house and playing like a normal, happy cat, though he still maintained a unique way of getting around.

To protect his sensitive feet, he learned to scoot his way down from high places before jumping, ensuring he didn’t put too much pressure on his paws.

A Crucial Message

Buhbo’s journey opened his mom’s eyes to a much larger issue in the animal welfare world.

She learned that an estimated 22 million cats have been declawed, a practice that is now illegal in many states.

The heartbreaking reality is that nearly half of these surgeries are botched, leaving cats in chronic pain just like Buhbo.

Even when the procedure goes exactly as planned, the healing process is incredibly painful for the animal. His mom now hopes to spread awareness about the reality of the procedure to protect other cats.

A Life Changed

Today, Buhbo is thriving in a home where his needs are always met and his paws are finally pain-free.

He continues to open up more and more each day, shedding the last remnants of the frightened, hurting cat he used to be.

His mom’s only goal is to give this incredibly special cat the absolute best life possible.

She is endlessly grateful to have him by her side, knowing that while she saved his life, his resilient spirit completely changed hers.
