North Carolina Cat Learns To Swim From Dogs And Falls In Love With The Ocean

Most of us grow up believing that cats hate water. Ask any cat parent and they will tell you that bathtime is usually a battle. But every so often, a special cat comes along to challenge the stereotype.
Meet Marlin, an adventurous orange tabby from Hatteras Island, North Carolina, who has fallen head over paws in love with the ocean.

Marlin’s mom, Caroline Jarvis Hopkins, is a professional photographer who lives with her husband Mack and their three dogs.
Their days are filled with fishing, boating, long beach walks, and soaking up the coastal lifestyle. When Marlin joined the family at just five and a half weeks old, Caroline never imagined that he would take to the sea like a natural.
From the start, Marlin adored his canine brothers. He trailed after them wherever they went, determined not to miss a single adventure.

When the family loaded the dogs onto the boat, Marlin insisted on tagging along. What began as simple curiosity soon blossomed into something extraordinary.
One afternoon, Marlin watched closely as the dogs used the steps leading into the water. Driven by curiosity, he followed. But the little tabby slipped and fell straight into the ocean.
Caroline and Mack were stunned, bracing themselves for a panicked scramble. Instead, Marlin did something incredible. Rather than clawing and crying, he swam calmly and confidently. Caroline recalled that he swam even better than the dogs.

That first splash was all it took. Marlin was hooked. From that day on, the orange kitten became a regular beach visitor, boat rider, and ocean explorer.
He never shied away from waves or splashes, and before long he was going on full swims. As Caroline explained in the video:
“He was a natural to loving the ocean because he was raised by dogs.”
His canine siblings may have taught him how to enjoy the water, and perhaps Marlin taught them a bit about the finer art of grooming in return.

As Marlin grew, so did his reputation. Locals could not resist stopping to greet the swimming cat whenever they saw him at the shore.
Beachgoers snapped photos, children pointed in amazement, and fellow pet owners marveled at his confidence in the waves. Caroline said he quickly became a bit of a celebrity around the island.
His fame reached new heights when People Magazine featured his story. Overnight, Marlin went from being the neighborhood’s ocean cat to a national sensation.

Videos of his aquatic adventures racked up thousands of views, and people everywhere fell in love with the cat who broke all the rules.
Today, Marlin continues to join his family on their coastal excursions. He rides the boat with ease, dips into the ocean without hesitation, and soaks up the sun like a seasoned beachgoer.
He is living proof that cats are as individual as people, each with their own quirks and passions.
For anyone who wants to follow more of Marlin’s seaside escapades, Caroline regularly shares videos on YouTube and posts photos on Instagram.
His journey is not just about a cat who loves to swim, but about embracing the unexpected and celebrating the uniqueness in every animal.
