When cats find themselves in unfamiliar surroundings, they become scared because it’s a stressful experience for them. Their instinctual reaction is a hiss, which is their way of expressing fear.
This is particularly true in shelters, where sadly, potential adopters may overlook hissing cats, assuming they’re unfriendly. But these sweet bundles just need a little time and attention to reveal their true, loving selves.
Thus, while a hiss might mean “no” for a cat, it doesn’t define their overall temperament. As Nathan Kehn, a rescuer at Stray Cat Alliance, puts it: “Not every hiss is a mean one.”
Kehn demonstrates his point with Evy, a sweet ginger tabby. Evy initially hisses at Kehn’s approach, clearly uncomfortable as he extends his hand.
However, this doesn’t bother Kehn because he knows that hissing is just her way of saying she’s scared, not mean, as he explains in an interview:
“Hissing means they’re scared but it doesn’t always mean they’re mean. They’re just nervous, you’ve got to take it slow.”
As Kehn gently reassures Evy that he only wants to cuddle her, she soon melts into affection, proving his point that not every hiss means trouble.
This is an important lesson for those who intend to adopt a shelter cat: they may hiss at first, but they just need love and understanding. And when they find it, they’ll show you just how sweet they can be, just like Evy did. Kehn adds:
“To be honest, Evy was all hiss and no bite. The moment you would slowly go in for a pet, she would just melt her sweet face right into your palm for more ear scratches and love!”
After his demonstration, Kehn shares Evy’s amazing story, telling how his social media posts about this ginger cutie led to her finding a loving forever home.
It all began with Kehn posting photos and videos of Evy on Instagram. Soon enough, a lovely ginger-haired couple spotted her and called the shelter to learn more about her.
Initially, Sarah and Jon planned only to foster Evy, but they quickly fell in love with her. They were captivated by her charm, stealing their heart a little more each day, until it became clear that Evy was more than just a foster cat.
As they watched her blossom under their care, Sarah and Jon knew they were meant to be Evy’s forever family. Their bond was just too strong to let go, so they decided to adopt her, embracing her as a cherished member of their household.
Today, Evy enjoys her new life with Sarah and Jon and thrives in her cozy home. She is surrounded by endless affection and love, knowing she’s exactly where she belongs.
Besides her beloved pawrents, she has a furry buddy named Ralphie, who is like her ginger sibling. This happy family now shares love, laughter, and matching ginger hues!
Nathan adds:
“Not only was Evy adopted into an amazing loving home, but she also has a new furry sibling who looks just like her – two gorgeous orange creamsicles! Really cute, we must admit!”
From a hissing stray to an affectionate cuddle bug, Evy, now named Cindy Lou, has found her bliss in this ginger paradise.
And it’s bliss without a hiss!
Her transformation truly shows that every cat, regardless of their initial reactions, has the potential to fill our lives with love and joy!
