Oklahoma Man In Disbelief After Discovering What’s Inside A Bag Hanging On Shelter Door Handle

Sadly, seeing stray or abandoned animals on the streets has become all too common.
When people can’t care for their pets anymore, or simply don’t want them, many just abandon them.
However, some choose a more humane option – taking their pets to a shelter, hoping they’ll find a better home.
Still, more often than not, animals are left in the most shocking ways, and Scott Lockard knows that better than anyone.
The Mysterious Bag Hanging On The Shelter Door Handle

One day, Scott headed to work at the Oklahoma Humane Society only to come across a heartbreaking sight.
He spotted a black bag tied to the shelter’s door handle, but what was inside left him devastated.
After checking, Scott found a small brown dog inside, and unfortunately, this wasn’t the first time he had found animals left at the center. He shared in an interview:
“This wasn’t the first time I have arrived at the adoption center to find animals waiting there, so I can’t say I was super surprised. I was happy to get her in and fed and watered, so I was mostly just thinking about getting the little dog comfortable.”

Determined to help, Scott gently took the pup inside and took some time to get to know her. The dog was initially very shy, but thankfully, she appeared to be very healthy.
When Scott looked inside the bag once again, he found a devastating handwritten note that read:
“Her name is Maris, find her a good home.”
Based on the note, Scott assumed that whoever left the dog behind may have cared for her but wasn’t able to keep her, because that often happens too.
A Never-Ending Problem

Despite taking Maris under their care, the shelter decided to use her situation to raise awareness about the increasing number of dogs abandoned at their center.
They shared Maris’s photo in hope of finding her a good home while also encouraging people to stop leaving their pets as if they were toys. Roshelle Anderson, the marketing manager, shared:
“We didn’t post the photo to specifically call out the people who left the pet, but rather, to bring attention to a greater problem facing our community.”
As with many shelters across the U.S., this shelter is overwhelmed. The main reason for that is because adoptions are slowing while the number of abandoned dogs keeps rising.
Besides that, there aren’t enough foster homes, and with limited space and resources, it’s difficult to accommodate every animal.
The shelter staff is urging people to step up and adopt. By doing so, they won’t just help many dogs find loving homes, but will also save countless lives.
As for Maris, she’s under the loving care of the shelter staff in Oklahoma.
But they hope from the bottom of their hearts that she will soon find a loving family and a forever home where she will be loved and cherished for the rest of her life.
