Left to survive on his own after his mother delivered twins, a tiny bison named Tatanka found comfort in the most unexpected way.
A Giant With A Gentle Heart
The bison weighs roughly 1,000 pounds now, a massive creature whose head alone is as large as a grown person’s torso.
But the moment he sees his favorite person, this giant animal does only one thing. He walks straight toward her and does not stop until he can rest that enormous head right on top of her.
And if she makes the mistake of reaching for her phone, he playfully smacks it right out of her hand with his nose.
It is a bond built on deep trust, but getting to this beautiful point was a journey neither of them could have predicted.
A Mother’s Impossible Choice
Tatanka’s life began in a very difficult place. His mother was a bison who had delivered twins, a rare occurrence that often comes with heartbreak in the wild.
When bison mothers have twins, they often cannot sustain both calves. In order for one to survive, the other must be left to fend for itself.
Tatanka ended up as the orphan. He was left alone on the property where his future rescuer worked, and it quickly became her job to keep the little calf alive.
Tiny, Fragile, And Terrified
When he first arrived in her care, Tatanka was tiny. He looked fragile in a way that felt almost wrong for an animal built to be so powerful.

The two animals were introduced out in the open field. They approached each other cautiously and touched noses just once.
That single interaction was all it took. From that day forward, the two young bison were absolutely inseparable.
Zoomies Across The Open Field
With Koda by his side, Tatanka’s world expanded even further. He now had a best friend to share his days with.
Together, the massive animals would get the “zoomies.” They would suddenly break into a full run across the open field, their hooves thundering against the earth.
They ran for no reason at all, except for the simple, beautiful fact that they could. Tatanka finally had a friend, a home, and a person who always stayed.
A Bond That Only Grows Stronger
Bison do not reach full maturity until they are four years old, and Tatanka is currently only two and a half. In many ways, he is still that young animal figuring out the world.
He is still testing where the edges are, growing larger and stronger every single day. Yet, his heart remains exactly the same.
Every day, this 1,000-pound giant actively chooses to come back to the one person who sat with him when he had nothing, proving that love can bridge the gap between any two species.
