Michigan Couple Opens Wrapped Lava Rocks Only To Find A Tiny Furball Inside

Shelby Elko and her husband had only planned a quick stop at Menards to grab some concrete for a home project. It was meant to be an ordinary shopping trip, nothing out of the ordinary.

But among the rows of building supplies, something completely unexpected happened, something that would instantly capture Shelby’s heart.

As they debated how many bags of concrete to buy, a soft, almost imperceptible sound reached their ears – a tiny meow.

At first, Shelby thought she was imagining it. But then it came again.

Curious, they started looking around. That’s when they noticed a movement inside a shrink-wrapped stack of lava rocks.

The bag was tightly sealed, and nothing should have been inside, but clearly something was.

Carefully, Shelby’s husband pulled apart the plastic, and to their amazement, out tumbled the tiniest gray kitten, bouncing softly like a tiny ball of fluff.

He landed on a pile of bags with a soft thump, wide-eyed and stunned, but thankfully okay.

The couple was completely taken aback by what they had just found, as Shely shared in a YouTube video:

“We were just in absolute shock.”

Neither of them could believe that such a fragile little life had been trapped inside that heavy stack of rocks, hidden away and unheard until then.

There was no mama cat in sight. No siblings, either. Just this one brave baby who had somehow ended up sealed inside a stack of rocks, meowing his lungs out.

The little kitten looked no older than five days, and Shelby’s heart ached imagining how frightened and lost he must have felt.

She had no idea where he had come from or how he ended up there, but one thing was certain: he wasn’t going back to that heap of lava rocks.

So Shelby took him straight to her home.

Shelby carefully bottle-fed him, watching every nap, tiny wiggle, and soft squeak with tender attention.

She called him Oscar, just until a better name came along. But honestly, Oscar suited him just perfectly.

Then, the very next day, something surprising happened. Shelby heard that about a mama cat and her kittens found at the same store.

Could Oscar belong to them?

She rushed over with him, hoping maybe he’d get a little reunion. But once they saw the kittens, it was obvious that Oscar was way too young to be part of their family.

But even if they weren’t blood, the other kittens welcomed him. And Oscar, despite being the tiniest of the bunch, fit right in.

Everyone agreed it was a good idea for him to stay with the others, just so he wouldn’t grow up alone.

And so the mama cat and her kittens, including Oscar, went into foster care where they could finally rest, feel safe, and get the love they needed.

The foster mom provides Shelby with daily updates, sharing that Oscar is thriving. He may be tiny, but he’s full of energy, always hungry, and getting stronger with each passing day.

Now, Shelby is counting down the days until she can bring him home for good. Every update she gets makes her heart swell.

Oscar’s story could’ve ended so differently. But instead, it turned into something beautiful: a little miracle hidden in a stack of lava rocks, now safe, loved, and thriving.

And for Shelby, he’s already become family.
