Kentucky Woman Rescues An Orphaned Lamb And Is Stunned By What Happens When It Meets Her Dog

It all started when Lacy’s sister-in-law asked her if she could take in a newborn lamb.
The poor little guy had been rejected by his mom, left without the warmth and care every baby needs.
Now here’s the thing: Lacy didn’t have a single ounce of sheep experience. Not one. But still, her heart just said yes.
And that’s how a tiny lamb named Richard ended up in her arms.

Lacy quickly learned that raising a lamb was no small task. Richard needed to be bottle-fed every few hours, day and night, and she poured herself into it.
She became the mama he never had. She held him close, making sure he stayed warm, and showered him with love.
But after a while, something tugged at her. As much as she adored Richard, she knew sheep were flock animals. They needed their own kind.
So she brought home two more sheep, hoping Richard would bond with them. But… he didn’t.

Richard couldn’t have cared less about the other sheep. His little heart had already chosen someone else.
That someone was Chumley.
Chumley was the farm’s livestock guardian, a big, steady pup with a thick coat and a watchful eye. He took his job seriously, always on duty.
But the moment Richard tottered up to him, something changed. It was as if Richard looked at him and thought, “Yep. You’re mine.”

From that day on, Richard was glued to Chumley. Wherever Chumley went, Richard went. Through the fields, across the yard, even during naps.
Richard followed him like a little woolly shadow, determined never to be far from his side.
Lacy would peek out the window, and there they’d be, curled up together, Richard nestling into Chumley’s fur as if it were the softest blanket in the world.
And Chumley? He just lay there, calm and content, letting Richard cuddle as much as he wanted.

Their bond went deeper than simple comfort.
One day, when a curious chicken wandered a bit too close to Chumley while he was resting, Richard wasn’t having it.
The tiny lamb stepped in, nudging and shooing the chicken away as if to say, “Back off. That’s my friend.”
That was the moment Lacy realized this wasn’t just a lamb tagging along with a dog. Richard was protective, too.

And Chumley showed the same devotion right back.
Sure, he protected all the animals on the land; it was his job, after all, but Richard? Richard was different.
One day, another dog on the property got a little too playful and tugged at Richard. Chumley was there in an instant, as Lacy shared in a YouTube video:
“Chumley went after her and told her, ‘Nope, knock it off.’ He corrected the behavior, like, ‘We don’t do that around here, we leave Richard alone.’”

Every morning, when Lacy steps outside, she finds them side by side. Chumley refuses to stay in the house; his place is with Richard.
On their daily walks, Chumley scans the area like a watchful guardian. But the way he keeps his eyes on Richard is different. As Lacy put it:
“Chumley is very protective of Richard. He just wants to make sure that he is safe all the time.”

Lacy always respected her animals, but this experience opened her eyes in a whole new way. She shared:
“Livestock are a lot more intelligent than we think they are. They can connect to other animals, maybe more than we think they can.”
And looking at Richard and Chumley, it’s hard to disagree.
Their friendship is proof that love doesn’t bother with labels. It doesn’t matter if you’re a lamb or a dog; it just matters that you’ve found your person, or in this case, your best friend.
