Nick never learned the full story of where Minnie came from before she arrived at the shelter in Baltimore.
He only knew that by the time she got there, she had already decided she did not trust dogs.

So when they later decided to adopt a boxer, nobody expected things to go smoothly.

It was, by Nick’s account, an ongoing negotiation that Minnie had no intention of losing.
