Kitten Thrown From Car On Maryland Bridge Clings To A Ledge Until An Officer Changes His Fate
When a four-week-old kitten was tossed from a moving vehicle on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, his survival seemed impossible. But a tiny metal ledge and a determined officer changed everything.
An Unthinkable Act
A tiny kitten, weighing just a pound and a half, found himself in a terrifying situation high above the Potomac River. At just four to six weeks old, the helpless animal was subjected to an unthinkable act of cruelty.
On a Sunday morning near National Harbor, witnesses watched in horror as the little feline was tossed from the window of a moving vehicle on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.
The sheer drop into the churning water below or the busy traffic lanes could have easily been fatal. But in a miraculous stroke of luck, the kitten’s story didn’t end there.
A Miraculous Landing Spot
Instead of falling into the river or the roadway, the tiny baby landed on a narrow ledge.
The small 4×4 metal ledge was located just beyond the pedestrian path, about eight feet below the side of the bridge.
It was a spot that didn’t even extend the full length of the bridge. As rescuers later noted, if the kitten had landed just three feet in a different direction, he never would have survived.
Good Samaritans Step In
The kitten was alive, but he was trapped in an incredibly difficult spot to reach.
Thankfully, two witnesses refused to look the other way. One of them was a man visiting from North Carolina who happened to be riding his bike across the bridge at the time.
The good Samaritans immediately flagged down help, alerting the Maryland-National Capital Park Police to the desperate situation unfolding over the water.
The Perfect Officer Arrives
Corporal Christi Montgomery was the responding officer, and she was exactly the right person for the job.
When she looked down at the trapped kitten, she realized the physical challenge ahead of her. "For a minute, I kind of thought, what could I do? Because I knew I couldn’t get down there," she recalled.
But Corporal Montgomery had a secret weapon: she is actively involved in animal rescue. Because of this, she already had a can of cat food waiting in her police cruiser.
Reaching Down For A Miracle
Armed with the fragrant cat food, Corporal Montgomery positioned herself to make the rescue attempt.
She laid flat on top of the bridge and reached her arms down as far as she possibly could toward the frightened animal.
The drop was steep, and the kitten was terrified, but the smell of the food and the gentle sound of the officer’s voice caught his attention.
A Heart-Stopping Climb
The tiny kitten wanted to reach the safety of the officer’s hands, but his small size made the climb incredibly difficult.
"I knew he was trying to get to me, but he kept falling back down," Corporal Montgomery shared. "And he would get a little closer, and I kept saying, ‘You can do it. You can do it.’"
With every slip, the officer feared the worst. "My heart’s dropping, thinking that he’s not coming back," she said.
Safe At Last
Despite his exhaustion and fear, the determined little kitten gave it one last push.
He finally made it into Corporal Montgomery’s waiting hands. "He did, and it was the craziest thing ever," she said with relief.
Once safely in her arms, the reality of the situation set in. "He was so scared. I was scared. But he’s okay," the officer added.
A Generous Offer For The Future
Following his harrowing ordeal, the kitten was taken to the Prince George’s County Animal Shelter on Brown Station Road to recover.
While police continue to investigate the incident as a case of animal cruelty, the brave little survivor is resting comfortably and waiting for a forever home.
In a beautiful final twist, the bicyclist from North Carolina who helped save him stepped up once more. He generously offered to pay some or all of the adoption fees to ensure this miracle kitten gets the loving family he truly deserves.
