Nebraska Game And Parks Officer Rushes To Help A Struggling Animal, Then Freezes In Shock

Every rescue begins with a moment: someone notices an animal in trouble and chooses to do something about it. That simple act of compassion can change everything.

And that’s exactly how one young bobcat’s story began.

Somewhere in north-central Nebraska, a bobcat’s life took a sudden, terrible turn. He had been struck by a car and lay on the roadside, hurt and terrified.

But fate wasn’t done with him yet. A Nebraska Game and Parks officer came across the injured animal and was shocked to see it was a bobcat. He immediately called for help.

Laura Stastny, executive director of Nebraska Wildlife Rehab, picked up the phone and sent her team right away. The rescuers rushed the bobcat to the vet, hoping the damage wasn’t too severe.

Sadly, the X-rays told a different story. His femur was broken, and not just anywhere. The fracture was near a growth plate, making the injury far more complicated.

For most, that kind of injury would have been a grim prognosis. But as this little guy lay on the exam table, his eyes showed that he wasn’t ready to give up.

That determination was all the reason the team needed to try. As Laura later explained in a YouTube video:

“Despite the severity of his injuries, we realized that that young bobcat had an amazing will to live. And because of that, it made sense to at least try to do a surgical intervention and fix his fractured leg.”

Specialist surgeons at Sirius Veterinary Orthopedic Center in Omaha agreed to help. The surgery was long, over four hours, and required the utmost precision.

But in the middle of the operation, they discovered something unexpected: this wasn’t his first injury.

It looked like his leg had been broken at least a week earlier. That old injury had likely slowed him down, leaving him vulnerable to being hit by the car.

The next challenge was ensuring he stayed still long enough to heal. The rescue team designed a custom enclosure roomy enough for comfort, but restrictive enough to protect his leg.

It also had to keep caregivers safe while they cleaned his space, delivered medication, and checked on him day and night.

They named him Dirsko, in honor of the surgeon who gave him a second chance.

Slowly but surely, Dirsko began to improve. The swelling went down, his range of motion returned, and no complications appeared.

When he was strong enough, Dirsko moved into a larger space where he could walk and rebuild muscle. Soon, his once-injured leg was nearly as good as new. Laura shared:

“Every step of the way he exceeded our expectations and the expectations of his veterinarians.”

Finally, the day came for Dirsko to return to the wild. The team chose a 5,500-acre protected ranch near where he was found, the perfect place for a fresh start.

When the door opened, Dirsko stepped out without hesitation and slipped into the trees, free again. For everyone who had cared for him, it was the moment they had worked toward for months, as Laura shared:

“All of the getting up every four hours to give him medication, all of the cage cleaning all of the veterinary visits, all went to that one moment when he could return to the wild and the life that he deserves.”

Rescues like Dirsko’s aren’t luck. They happen because people care enough to fight for an animal’s second chance.

It’s their dedication, sleepless nights, and willingness to go the extra mile that turn moments of despair into stories of hope.

Because of people like them, more wild animals get the chance to heal, return to their natural homes, and live the free, beautiful lives they were always meant to have.
