When rescue volunteers step up to take in animals in need, they don’t always know exactly who they will be bringing home.
For Nikki, the handoff was as simple as being handed a closed cardboard box.
She had no idea what condition the kittens inside were in, or even what they looked like. But before she even opened the flaps, she got a very clear hint.
A massive, demanding voice was echoing from the cardboard walls.

“He had a big set of lungs on him, I could tell,” Nikki recalled. “He was screaming, ‘Get me out of this box!'”
When she finally got a look at him, she saw an incredibly small, fragile kitten. Despite his tiny size, his spirit was fierce and his voice was booming.
Because he spent his first days crying out for attention, Nikki decided to give him a fitting name. She called him Waylon, because he was always wailing.
Around-The-Clock Dedication
Waylon was so young that he couldn’t eat on his own.
Kittens in his fragile state require intensive, 24-hour care to survive. There are no days off when fostering a newborn.
To make sure he stayed fed and healthy, Waylon had to travel everywhere with his foster mom.
Whether she was running errands or going about her day, the tiny, vocal kitten was always right by her side.
A Lonely Quarantine
For the safety of everyone in the house, new rescue kittens have to be kept separate from resident pets for at least two weeks.
Waylon was set up in his own safe enclosure to serve out his quarantine. Unsurprisingly, the social little kitten absolutely hated it.
He didn’t like being alone, and he certainly didn’t like it when his foster mom left the room.
Throughout his isolation, he made sure to use his big lungs to voice his complaints.
Free Rein And Toilet Paper Confetti
Finally, Waylon received a clean bill of health.
With his quarantine over, the energetic kitten was given free rein of the house. It didn’t take long for his wild side to shine through.
Nikki always knew exactly where to find him, especially if she walked into the bathroom.
She would often discover her toilet paper holder completely shredded, with tiny pieces of paper scattered everywhere like confetti.

He joined a bustling household that already included a cat and two dogs, giving him plenty of friends to keep him entertained.
“I couldn’t have picked a better home for him,” Nikki shared, thrilled that the tiny wailing kitten finally had an audience to love him for the rest of his life.
