Ohio Cat Overlooked For A Year Because Of Her Needs Finds The Perfect Person To Guide Her Home

After spending a year in a shelter with no applications, a blind and overweight senior cat finally gets the dedicated care and loving home she desperately needed.

When a senior cat finds herself in a shelter, the odds are already stacked against her. But for one special feline, the challenges went far beyond her age.

She was completely blind in both eyes and significantly overweight, making daily life a struggle. For about a year, she waited in a cage, hoping someone would give her a chance.

Sadly, the adoption applications never came. That is, until a casual visit to a local rescue changed everything for this gentle soul.

At the Cat Welfare Association, a local nonprofit rescue in Columbus, Ohio, a cat named Ethel was running out of time. Staff members were growing concerned that she might become a permanent resident.

Ethel’s challenges were significant. Not only was she older and blind, but her severe weight issues meant she needed help wiping her backside.

For many potential adopters, that level of care was a dealbreaker. Cats with those kinds of daily needs often get overlooked in a crowded shelter system.

Love At First Sight

Donna happened to be visiting a friend who worked at the rescue when she first laid eyes on the senior cat. She immediately noticed Ethel’s unique appearance.

Donna affectionately described her as a "little balloon with these tiny little legs and her little white toes."

While others saw a burden or a difficult commitment, Donna felt an immediate pull. She was drawn to the sweet cat and desperately wanted to help her.

She knew she had to be the one to give Ethel a loving home. Without hesitation, she decided to adopt the special-needs feline.

A Mysterious Past

Ethel’s history before arriving at the Ohio shelter remained a bit of a mystery. However, Donna strongly believed that the sweet cat had known the comfort of a home at some point in her life.

Whether she had been dumped or her previous owner had passed away, one thing was absolutely certain.

Given her blindness and physical limitations, Ethel would not have survived on her own. She needed humans to look out for her.

The Anxious First Days

In 2018, Donna officially adopted Ethel and brought her home. Those first few days were filled with anxiety as Donna wondered how the blind cat would adjust to a brand-new environment.

Unlike other cats who might immediately hide under a couch or climb a bookshelf, Ethel took a much more cautious approach.

She stayed mostly in the middle of the room, slowly getting a feel for where things were. She was carefully getting her bearings in an unfamiliar space.

Creating A Tactile Map

To help Ethel navigate her new world, Donna implemented some brilliant tactile strategies. She made sure never to move any furniture out of its usual place, giving Ethel a reliable mental map.

Donna also placed a towel underneath the litter box. This simple trick allowed Ethel to feel the fabric and know she was getting close to her bathroom area.

Different textured rugs were placed strategically around the house to serve as sensory landmarks.

By feeling the transition from carpet to a rug, Ethel could easily tell if she was in the living room or the kitchen.

Tackling The Weight Loss Journey

With Ethel safely settled in, it was time to address her severe weight issue. Tipping the scales at a heavy 16 pounds, the senior cat desperately needed a lifestyle change.

Donna purchased a food scale and meticulously weighed every single meal to track Ethel’s calorie intake.

She switched Ethel to a wet food diet, which naturally has fewer calories than dry kibble. The wet food also provided extra hydration and was much easier on the cat’s bad teeth.

Establishing A Healthy Routine

Consistency was key to Ethel’s weight loss journey. Donna established a strict feeding schedule, offering breakfast, a snack, and dinner at the exact same time every day.

This routine helped Ethel understand that she couldn’t simply meow and look cute to get extra food outside of meal times.

Donna also eliminated free-grazing to ensure Ethel didn’t eat out of sheer boredom. Just like humans, cats can overeat for the simple pleasure of it, and Donna wanted to set Ethel up for success.

A Beautiful Transformation

The dedication and strict routine paid off in a massive way. Over time, Ethel safely lost half of her body weight, dropping from 16 pounds down to a healthy 8 pounds.

Today, the sweet senior is approximately 13 or 14 years old and thriving in her forever home.

After a year of being overlooked in a shelter, Ethel finally got the beautiful, healthy, and loving life she always deserved.
