Texas Family Confused When Their Cat Starts Coming Home In Sweaters, Then The Secret Comes Out
Cats always seem to keep life interesting. One second, they’re melting your heart, and the next, they’re doing something that makes you wonder why you ever trusted them alone for five minutes.
That’s exactly what happened to a family in Texas after a mysterious black cat wandered into their yard and stretched out on their couch as if he’d lived there forever.
They named him Papa Legba, determined to give him the warmth and safety he’d never known on the streets.
But Papa Legba wasn’t the type to settle quietly. His adventurous little heart had plans of its own, and it didn’t take long before he started sneaking around the house, plotting escapes, and trying to see what was waiting for him beyond that front door.

No matter how hard they tried to keep him indoors, Papa Legba’s family soon realized that his true joy came from his outdoor adventures.
What reassured them most was his loyalty. Whenever they called his name or offered his favorite treats, he would come trotting back home without hesitation.
Crystal Robert, the cat’s human mom, describes how much he loves going on his outdoor adventures:
“When he sneaks out (we do make an effort to keep him in), he seems to run in the same direction, as if he has someplace to go.”
Crystal began to suspect that Papa Legba might have another family nearby, since he always wandered off in the same direction.
She almost dismissed the idea – until one day he came back home wearing a little sweater, proving her hunch was right.

However, what surprised Crystal even more was the fact that someone managed to put a sweater on Papa Legba. She said:
“I can’t believe his second family got him to wear a sweater. He likes to be held and cuddled, but he hates collars and being brushed. He only likes contact on his own terms… How did they get him to wear a sweater?! Strangely, he seems to like it. He seems more docile, or maybe just embarrassed.”
But the surprises kept coming. Papa Legba continued returning home in different outfits.
One day, he came with a cheerful pink sweater, a T-shirt proudly reading “Born to be awesome,” leaving no doubt that someone else was spoiling him too.
Of course, cats leading double lives isn’t unheard of, but it always comes as a shock when you realize it.
Three years later, they learned the cat had been spending winters in Florida with another family who took him along.

Crystal felt certain Papa Legba had another family out there – the kind who loved dressing him up in sweaters – but she couldn’t help wondering why they never seemed suspicious about his disappearing acts.
Determined to get to the bottom of it, she set off on a neighborhood mission, armed with curiosity and a tray of baked goods to help open doors and start conversations.
However, she didn’t learn much. No one knew anything about the sweaters or the cat. After visiting every house in the neighborhood, Crystal said:
“I have narrowed it down to two houses. I am making my way to those houses on my rounds with baked goods in the hope of information. I haven’t met his other family yet, but I hope we can continue to ‘share’ custody.”
So far, the mystery family has yet to reveal themselves, leaving Papa Legba’s sweater adventures unsolved.

While his family would love for him to stay indoors, they take comfort in knowing that when he wanders off, there’s someone out there caring for him too.
Crystal hopes she’ll find this sweater-loving family so that she can at least thank them for the sweaters. She added:
“I hope people can keep their pets at home, inside. They are our family, and they are safest when with their owners, but if you have a wily cat like ours, I hope you are blessed with generous and lovely neighbors like mine.”
Whether Papa Legba’s secret family ever comes forward or not, one thing is clear – he will always be surrounded by love and care from both sides, giving him the best of both worlds.
After all, every cat deserves a touch of mystery and plenty of affection.
