Two Tiny Eyes In A Flooded Marsh Lead Mississippi Team To A Life-Saving Rescue
Sometimes, animals find themselves in situations they simply can’t get out of, and that’s exactly what happened to a tiny kitten in Byram, Mississippi.
Her soft, desperate cries echoed across a flooded marsh, a clear plea for help that couldn’t be ignored.
The call went straight to the Animal Rescue Fund (ARF) of Mississippi. Peggy Harrell, the shelter’s director and cofounder, quickly rallied her team, knowing that every moment counted if they were going to save the little kitten’s life.

After hours of searching the swampy area near a stormwater pond at an apartment complex, the rescuers finally saw two little eyes staring back at them through the grass.
Pippa Jackson from ARF described it in an interview:
“The kitten was on a bog of growing grasses and vines. The bog was floating, and the kitten had found a woven maze of roots that was in the middle part of the floating bog.”

Finding her was a relief, but actually reaching her turned out to be trickier than expected.
Kelly Collins, one of the rescuers, waded in, but the kitten kept retreating deeper into the marsh, as Jackson explained:
“Kelly was very unsure about getting into the bog and falling through, and was scared she would send the kitten running and then the kitten would drown. She could sometimes hear and see the kitten, but it would hide.”

Eventually, Kelly had to pull back, but the rest of the team refused to give up. They knew the kitten wouldn’t survive overnight alone, especially with cold water, snakes, and storm drains all around.
Determined to save her, Jackson called in more help. As the rescuers scoured the marsh, the kitten’s cries got louder, guiding them straight to her. Jackson remembered:
“She started screaming to us, ‘HELP ME!’ We began trying to find her, trying to figure out how to get to her without getting waist deep in the cold water and figure out where exactly she was.”

Some team members waded through mud and tangled vines. It wasn’t as deep as they feared, but it was still tricky terrain.
After hours of careful searching, one rescuer finally spotted the kitten darting across the floating roots. Seizing the moment, she lunged and scooped up the tiny, frightened feline.
Soaking wet, caked in mud, and shivering, the kitten was rushed to the shelter. She got a warm bath and immediate veterinary care.

They named her Marsha, and she quickly started showing her sassy but sweet personality. Jackson said:
“Marsha is quite affectionate, loves to snuggle, and being held. She’s something special. She’s sassy but incredibly sweet.”
Thanks to the dedication and patience of the ARF team, Marsha now has a second chance at life. She’s safe, loved, and eagerly waiting for her forever home.
