At Figgy Farm Animal Sanctuary in Flemingsburg, Kentucky, the team’s hearts always seem to find room for one more soul in need.
One evening, a call came in about a tiny, sickly kitten found trapped underneath a truck. Scarlett, a devoted staff member, was the one to answer it.
The vet had been grim about the little one’s chances, suggesting that her survival was like a flip of a coin. But Scarlett couldn’t ignore the fragile cry of a kitten fighting for life and decided to bring her to Figgy Farm.
The kitten was in terrible shape. She was extremely dehydrated and her tiny body was limp and weak, as Scarlett shared in a YouTube video:
“She was so dehydrated her eyes could barely open. I was honestly worried about her condition and whether or not she was going to make it.”
The kitten, whom Scarlett named Tofu, stayed curled up on her chest for weeks. Every couple of hours, Scarlett offered her small sips of water and little bites of wet food.
Despite her fragile state, Tofu slowly began to show signs of improvement. She would lift her head and take a few shaky steps, and every day she grew stronger.
Seeing how much Tofu was fighting to survive, Scarlett decided to bring her into her home for good. She knew it was going to be a long road, but she couldn’t bear the thought of sending her anywhere else.
As Tofu gained strength, her personality started to shine through. She was sweet and cuddly, a mama’s girl who wanted nothing more than to be held. Scarlett recounted:
“She slowly started to show a little bit more personality. She started to walk around on her own she gained strength and she could actually hold herself up. It was just such a beautiful thing to see her transformation.”
But as Scarlett watched Tofu thrive, another unexpected twist came. A friend called again – this time with another kitten, found abandoned in a parking lot, also struggling to survive. Her name was Ghost.
Scarlett didn’t hesitate to bring Ghost in. When she saw this tiny furball, she immediately knew she and Tofu were meant to be together.
Ghost was in better shape than Tofu had been at first, and Scarlett believed her playful, independent spirit would be just the companion Tofu needed.
As soon as Ghost entered the picture, the two became inseparable. They were opposites in so many ways. Tofu was all about cuddles and being carried around, while Ghost loved to explore and play on her own.
But somehow, they balanced each other out perfectly. Tofu’s softness complemented Ghost’s spunky energy, and Ghost’s adventurous nature brought Tofu out of her shell, as Scarlet explained:
“Tofu and Ghost are absolutely like yin and yang kittens. Tofu is a mama’s girl who loves to be carried around the house and Ghost is a lot more independent and playful and funky and they balance each other out perfectly.”
Now, the two of them are often found snuggled together or tumbling around the house in fits of joy.
These two little souls, who had once faced uncertain futures, are now living out their days in peace, love, and safety. Their future is as bright as it is beautiful, and Scarlett feels so lucky to be a part of it.
