Stray Mama Cat From California Overcomes Fear Of Humans Just To Be Reunited With Her Babies

Alissa Smith, one of the founders of Wrenn Rescues, got a call about a litter of kittens just 10 days old.

The tiny babies had already been pulled from danger by shelter staff in Downey, California, but they needed the care of someone with more experience to give them a real chance at survival.

Alissa shared in an interview:

“There were only 15 minutes left, and no one else was able to take them, but thankfully, the networking group got them out safely, and a wonderful woman named CJ transported them all the way out to Ventura County, California to us.”

The kittens were first discovered in a resident’s yard alongside their mother, who bolted in fear as soon as people tried to get close.

From there, foster volunteer Ashley and Wrenn Rescues co-founder Jenifer Hurt stepped in, taking the little ones to the centre where they were bottle-fed and cared for around the clock. Ashley said:

“The kittens were very obviously well taken care of by their cat mama. When orphaned kittens land in the shelter, they don’t usually see their mama again. Another important reason to leave kittens where they are found (and wait for the mom), instead of taking them to the shelter.”

Jenifer and Ashley were ready to continue bottle-feeding the kittens until they were old enough to eat on their own, but then something remarkable happened.

The rescuers who had first taken the kittens to the shelter spotted the mother cat near their home, clearly looking for her missing little ones.

They managed to safely catch her and, the very next day, she was joyfully reunited with her babies.

When she first came to the shelter, she was a bit scared and shy until Ashley brought her one of the kittens. She said:

“I held a baby up to her, and she visibly calmed down. We coaxed her out of the carrier with it. She went right over and curled up in the middle of her kittens, purring. They all went right to her and started nursing.”

Mama cat then started purring and nursing her babies. It was such a heartwarming reunion. Ashley added:

“So unbelievable that this miracle occurred. To say that the reunion went well is an understatement.”

The next morning, Ashley awoke to the soothing sound of the mother cat contentedly purring, a clear sign of her relief and happiness at being back with her kittens.

She cuddled her kittens, not letting them go. Ashley shared:

“As neonatal kitten foster parents, we do everything under the sun to make our fosters happy, comfortable, and content.”

However, nothing compares to a mother’s love and care. Ashley added:

“She is a patient mom and her gratitude to be back with her kittens is palpable. These are the happiest and luckiest babies.”
