NY Rescue Kitten Was So Terrified He Bit His Finder, But A Patient Foster Changed His Entire World

After a terrifying start left him stuck in a city shelter, a fearful rescue kitten named Fang needed someone to show him that humans could be trusted.

A Frightening Start

Fang and his sister, Ash, had a very rough start to life. When they were first found, Fang was so completely overwhelmed and terrified that he actually bit his finder.

He didn’t know what to do or who to trust in that moment. His fear response was simply a defense mechanism against a world he didn’t understand.

Because of the bite, the person who found him surrendered the pair to the city shelter. Fang was immediately placed on a mandatory 10-day Department of Health hold.

Stuck In The City Shelter

The shelter environment is stressful for any animal, but for an unsocialized, fearful little one, it can be paralyzing. Fang and Ash were stuck there, and nobody was stepping up to take them.

They desperately needed to be socialized in a home environment. Without that crucial step, they would have a much harder time ever getting adopted.

He was curious about the fun his sister was having. However, if the foster tried to approach him directly, he would immediately retreat.

To bridge the final gap, his foster brought out a high-value treat: salmon. If she had food, Fang’s fear would momentarily take a backseat to his appetite.

She decided to use this to her advantage. “I’m gonna see if Fang will eat this salmon from my hand,” she noted during a training session.

She made a gentle rule: if he wanted the food, he had to come up and put his paws on her lap for a second. It was a way to show him that being close to a human wasn’t scary at all.

Breaking Down The Walls

The salmon trick worked wonders. Fang began to learn that he could approach his foster on his own terms, and good things would happen.

Soon, he was letting her pet him for a little bit longer each time. The real breakthrough came when he finally hopped up onto the couch to sit with her.
