Michigan Couple Checks Wrapped Lava Rocks At Menards, Then Something Furry Jumps Out
What started as a simple trip to Menards quickly became an unforgettable moment for Shelby Elko and her husband.
They had planned to pick up a few bags of concrete, nothing more. But somewhere among the towering aisles of building materials, a tiny, unexpected surprise was waiting.
As Shelby double-checked the prices, she paused. Something soft and urgent reached her ears. A faint, desperate meow calling out for help.

At first, she brushed it off, thinking her mind was playing tricks on her. But then it came again, louder this time, cutting through the hum of the store.
Shelby and her husband followed the sound, scanning the aisles. That’s when they spotted a movement coming from a tightly wrapped pallet of lava rocks.
Everything inside should have been solid and still, yet something was shifting under the heavy plastic.
Her husband carefully tore a corner of the plastic, and to their shock, out rolled the tiniest gray kitten.

He tumbled down like a little puff of smoke, landing softly on a bag below. His wide eyes blinked up at them, dazed but alive.
Shelby’s heart dropped. She couldn’t believe such a fragile life had been sealed inside stacks of rock, sharing in a YouTube video:
“We were just in absolute shock.”
Shelby couldn’t even imagine how terrified he must have been, crying into the dark plastic with no one to hear him.

There was no sign of a mother cat. No littermates. Just one lonely baby who couldn’t have been more than five days old.
One thing was certain: he wasn’t going back. Shelby scooped him up and brought him home, determined to give him a fighting chance.
At home, she fed him with a tiny bottle and tucked him in safe. Every squeak, every stretch of his paws melted her heart.
She named him Oscar, just for now, though the name seemed to fit him perfectly.

The very next day, Shelby heard about a mama cat and her kittens who had also been found at the same store. Hope lit up inside her; maybe Oscar wasn’t alone after all.
She rushed to bring him over, dreaming of a reunion.
But when she compared them, it was clear. Oscar was too young. He didn’t belong to that little family.
Still, something beautiful happened.

The kittens didn’t turn him away. They snuggled up to him, and the mama cat welcomed him as though he were her own.
Everyone agreed Oscar should stay. Even if he wasn’t related by blood, he deserved the warmth and companionship of a family.
Together, the mama cat, her kittens, and Oscar were placed into foster care, where they could finally rest without fear.
Now, Shelby gets updates every day from the foster mom. Oscar is tiny but determined. He eats like a champ, wiggles with all his might, and grows stronger with each passing day.

And soon, he’ll be going back home. Shelby is already counting the days until he’s officially hers.
Every update makes her more certain that Oscar was meant to find her that day, tucked away in a stack of lava rocks.
What could have been a tragedy turned into a small miracle. A baby hidden where no one would ever expect, now safe, cherished, and loved.
