NY Woman Brought Home A Stray Kitten, But Her Corgi’s Reaction Left Her Completely Stunned

When a tiny stray kitten hitched a ride home on his rescuer’s shoulder, the real test was just beginning. Her Corgi had a history of chasing cats, but a careful introduction led to a beautiful bond no one saw coming.

An Unexpected Hitchhiker

It started as a normal day, but fate had a tiny, furry surprise in store. A woman found herself crossing paths with a remarkably skinny stray kitten who needed a safe place to land.

Instead of running away, the little feline decided to stick close to his new friend. In fact, he hitched a ride for the entire journey back to her house.

"I literally walked two and a half miles home with this little kitten riding on my shoulder," she recalled. It was an adorable sight, but it certainly drew some attention.

She got plenty of weird looks from people driving by. However, she didn’t care; getting the vulnerable kitten to safety was her only priority.

The Corgi Dilemma

While the journey home was a success, a major hurdle waited on the other side of the front door. The rescuer was already a proud pet parent to a four-year-old Corgi named Tyrion.

Tyrion was a sweet dog, but he had a very specific track record with felines. "He has chased every cat that he has interacted with," his mom explained.

Because of this history, she was incredibly anxious about bringing the tiny stray inside. She was convinced that her dog would completely terrorize the fragile new arrival.

"There’s no way that I can keep this cat," she thought at the time. Still, looking at the sweet kitten, she felt she owed him at least one fair chance.

A Carefully Crafted Plan

Determined to do things right, the rescuer turned to the internet for advice. She spent time Googling the safest ways to introduce a cat to a dog.

Armed with new knowledge, she came up with a step-by-step plan. First, she named the brave little kitten Gritty.

To start the process, she kept Gritty in a separate room with the door firmly closed. This allowed Tyrion to safely hear and smell the new arrival without any direct contact.

It was a slow and steady approach. She wanted to make sure neither animal felt overwhelmed by the sudden change in their environment.

The Peanut Butter Trick

After a couple of days of successful scent introductions, it was time for the next step. The closed door was swapped out for a baby gate.

The rescuer had read online that it was crucial to associate the cat with things the dog already loved. For Tyrion, that meant bringing out his favorite treat.

She sat with her Corgi and offered him a spoonful of peanut butter. While he happily licked the spoon, he was able to stare safely at Gritty through the gate.

The positive reinforcement worked perfectly. Tyrion was learning that having the kitten nearby meant good things were happening.

The Great Escape

The careful baby gate routine was going well until Gritty decided it was time to speed things up. One day, the rescuer was simply sitting on the couch relaxing with Tyrion.

True to his nature, Tyrion’s instincts kicked in. He tried to initiate a little bit of a chase with the tiny intruder.

But Gritty wasn’t like the other cats Tyrion had encountered. Instead of bolting in fear, the brave kitten simply stood his ground.

This completely baffled the Corgi. His mom could almost read his mind: "Why is this cat not running away from me?"

With the thrill of the chase gone, the tension in the room began to melt. Curiosity quickly replaced the dog’s instinct to pursue.

A Beautiful Brotherhood

Realizing there was no reason to fight or flee, the two animals slowly closed the distance. They tentatively leaned in and tried to sniff each other.

Looking back at that two-and-a-half-mile walk, the rescuer knows she made the right choice. Taking a chance on the skinny stray changed all of their lives for the better.

The dog who used to chase cats had finally found a feline best friend. The kitten who needed a safe haven had found a loving family.

"We had this bond. It felt like it was meant to be," she said with a smile.
