Meet Butters, a special-needs cat from Texas who lacks balance but makes up for it with a unique and joyful way of communicating with his devoted mom.
A Vocabulary Of Kicks
Butters has a couple of different kinds of kicks depending on his mood and what he wants.
There are his enthusiastic breakfast kickies and his supper kickies, which make him look just like he is riding an invisible bicycle in the air.
He also has “pick me up” kicks, which are a little bit slower and more deliberate.
“What are you kicking for, little moon?” his mom asks as his little paws go a mile a minute.
A Wobbly But Happy Life
Butters was taken in by his devoted mom when he was just 10 weeks old.
He was diagnosed with cerebellar hypoplasia, a neurological condition that means he doesn’t have any sense of balance or coordination.
Despite his wobbles, he isn’t in any pain at all.
In fact, his mom believes he doesn’t even realize he is any different from other cats.
Starting The Day Right
Because of his condition, Butters and his mom rely on a very solid daily routine to keep him comfortable.
Whenever she gets up in the morning, her first task is to gently wake up her little boy.
After a cheerful greeting, she helps him use the litter box to start the day off right.
Setting Up For Success
Mealtime requires a bit of extra preparation for a wobbly cat who can’t stand on his own.
His mom carefully sets up his special mat, his custom wheelchair, and his food bowl.
“Are you ready for breakfast?” she asks as he gets into position.
This supportive setup allows him to eat comfortably and safely without tumbling over.
Impressive Scoot Practice
Breakfast time also doubles as physical therapy for Butters.
He does his daily “scoot practice” across the floor, and his progress has been absolutely incredible.
Before, he could only scoot about two feet at a time.
Now, he can scoot six, seven, or even eight feet all the way across the room, and he can actually go pretty fast!
Messy Meals And Towel Wraps
With his lack of coordination, eating can sometimes be a messy endeavor.
“Did you get some food on your whiskers?” his mom laughs during breakfast.
Occasionally, he needs a gentle bath after his meal to get cleaned up.
Afterward, he gets wrapped up snugly in his little towel to dry off and stay warm.
A Heartwarming Bond
After breakfast and bath time are complete, it is finally time for snuggles.
The two share a very close bond, with Butters loving to sit with his nose tucked right under his mom’s chin.
“Comfy, comfy boy!” she tells him during their quiet moments together.
