You Won’t Believe What This Toothless Senior Cat In Texas Is Obsessed With

Every cat owner knows felines can form the most unexpected fixations, sometimes it’s a favourite blanket, sometimes it’s a particular person, and sometimes, well, it’s potatoes.
That’s exactly the case for Nugget, a charming toothless senior cat who captured hearts online thanks to his unusual obsession and the unshakable bond he shared with his humans, Anshu and her husband.
A Love Triangle, Or Rather A Quadrangle?

Anshu and her husband adopted Nugget back in 2020. From the moment his tiny paws touched the floor of their home, it was love at first sight, but not quite in the way Anshu expected.
Within days, Nugget had chosen his favourite human, and it wasn’t her.
“He’s always waiting for his dad to come home, or he meows. They don’t like being away from each other.”
For years, Anshu had been the one begging her husband to get a cat, but he’d always said no. That all changed when Nugget arrived. The once-reluctant husband was now completely smitten.
“He’s always picking him up and playing with him. They love playing hide-and-seek.”

But the story doesn’t end there. Nugget soon revealed a second great love in his life, one even more unexpected than his human dad. He was absolutely obsessed with potatoes.
“No matter where they are, he would always go sit where the potatoes were stored.”
Soon, the family noticed a pattern: if Nugget went missing, he could almost always be found napping in or beside the potato cabinet.
The photos of his unusual lounging spot went viral online, sparking endless comments and light-hearted theories.
Some people joked that Anshu had staged the photos to make him famous, but those who knew Nugget best said it was genuine, he really was a proud potato connoisseur.
Who knows, maybe his favourite song is, “I like big taters and I cannot lie. You otha kitties can’t deny.” At least that’s how I like to imagine it.
Farewell To The Potato King

Sadly, every beautiful story must eventually come to an end.
In July 2023, Nugget passed away after a long and courageous battle with feline osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer.
For a year and a half, he endured treatments, medications, and the inevitable aches of old age, all while continuing to fill his home with love and laughter.
When he finally crossed the Rainbow Bridge, Anshu shared a heartfelt tribute online that moved thousands of people:
“I am sorry we couldn’t do more for you, my baby. I love you so much, and I am still hearing your purr next to me. I know you’re watching over us. You have been so strong. You watched us grow, became our best friend. (…) Mummy and daddy will always be with you. Rest in peace and happiness, my Nuggie. No more medicine, no more drama, no more vet visits. Just run free and happy.”

Those words perfectly captured what Nugget meant to his family, not just a pet, but a soul who brought joy, comfort, and a good dose of laughter into their lives.
Although Nugget may no longer be here, his story continues to inspire animal lovers around the world. His Instagram page, still lovingly maintained by Anshu, celebrates his life and the quirky adventures that made him one of a kind.

His story is also a gentle reminder that senior cats deserve love too.
They may be older, slower, or a bit toothless, but they have endless affection to give and plenty of personality to share, just like Nugget, the cat who loved his dad and his potatoes in equal measure.
So next time you’re thinking about adopting, don’t overlook the seniors. They might just surprise you with a heart (and appetite) as big as Nugget’s.
