Puget Sound is known for its breathtaking wildlife and scenic views.

Locals usually scan the water hoping to catch a glimpse of seabirds or majestic whales passing through.

But on one particular day, the waters held a completely different kind of surprise.

A routine welfare check on a seemingly empty vessel quickly turned into a massive, unexpected animal rescue operation.

Tacoma police received a call about an anchored, abandoned sailboat floating in the sound.

When officers arrived to investigate, they were absolutely stunned by what they found inside.

The boat was crawling with cats in a situation that local authorities called completely unheard of.

Rescuers immediately got to work and were able to safely remove 30 cats from the vessel.

Even after removing the first large group, the rescue mission was far from over.

Officers could still hear desperate meows echoing from behind wooden panels and heavy furniture.

Animal control officers had to return the next day to carefully search below deck for the terrified animals hiding in the shadows.

By noon, they had safely secured 21 more cats, bringing the staggering total to over 50 rescued felines.

A Sunday Morning Jog

While the massive boat rescue was underway, another dramatic situation was unfolding just nearby.

Ashton Efferts and his friend Jesse McCunaha were out for their weekly Sunday morning jog along the beach.

Suddenly, a commotion caught their attention about halfway down their route.

People on the beach were pointing frantically toward the freezing waters of the sound.

No Time To Hesitate

One of the cats had somehow ended up in the icy water and was struggling to stay afloat.

Ashton didn’t think twice about the freezing temperatures or the danger.

He turned to his friend and simply asked, “Are we going to do something about it?”

Without waiting for an answer, he immediately sprang into action to save the drowning animal.

Braving The Frigid Sound

Ashton quickly stripped off his outer clothing and jumped right into the frigid water.

He swam out to the terrified cat, who was panicking and understandably unhappy about the terrifying ordeal.

The frightened feline lashed out, scratching her brave rescuer in a desperate attempt to survive.

But Ashton held on tight, determined to get the shivering animal back to dry land.

A Small Price For A Life

Despite the scratches, Ashton successfully brought the soaked cat safely back to the beach.

He later brushed off his minor injuries with a humble smile, noting that the water was so incredibly cold he couldn’t even feel the scratches at the time.

He knew that a few temporary marks were well worth the effort.

“This will heal up,” Ashton explained. “The cat will be alive.”

Hope For A Happy Ending

Once safely on the beach, a caring bystander rushed the soaked cat to a local animal hospital for proper medical attention.

When asked if they might adopt the feline they so bravely saved, Ashton explained he already had a cat in his studio and didn’t have the space.

But his jogging buddy Jesse, who doesn’t currently own a pet, smiled and offered a glimmer of hope for the rescued cat’s future.

“Maybe?” Jesse said with a thoughtful grin. “Maybe.”
