Mary hadn’t planned on bringing home a pregnant dog that day. She and her mom had just stopped at a Dollar General for a quick errand.

But fate had other plans.

Out in the parking lot was this dog. Her eyes were tired, her belly big, and she was walking like she had a watermelon strapped under her.

Mary’s heart sank at this poor girl, as she shared in a YouTube video:

“She had that mama waddle. We were like, ‘Oh, my gosh, this poor baby.’”

She was clearly pregnant, alone, and out of time. Mary took one look and knew she couldn’t leave her there. That sweet mama was coming home with her.

They named her Shugy, and as soon as she came home with them, everything just felt right.

First things first: bath time. Then Shugy curled up and slept for almost an entire day. It was like her body finally knew she was safe.

Mary and her mom didn’t know much about what came next. They just knew she needed rest, care, and love. And she got all three.

Mary had to head back to school during the week, so she could only visit on the weekends. In the meantime, her mom kept her posted with FaceTime.

One week, almost to the minute, after Shugy was rescued, it happened. Labor. Pups. So many little pups.

Seven squishy babies came into the world, one after another. Mary rushed home as fast as she could to meet them.

She couldn’t stop staring. They were perfect: tiny, round, and wiggly, with pink noses and soft little tummies, all curled up together like a pile of baby piglets.

At first, things were easy. Shugy handled motherhood really well. But once the little ones got the hang of walking, things got wild fast, as Mary shared:

“We literally had to chase them around like toddlers.”

But even with all the mess and noise, Mary loved every bit of it.  She had videos of the puppies being born, growing, and tumbling through the house like little furry balls.

The house was a disaster, and the pups were always into something, but none of that mattered. It was loud, it was messy, and sometimes totally exhausting.

But to Mary, it was perfect. Just the way it was supposed to be.

When it was time to find homes for the puppies, Mary made sure each one went to a family that would truly love them.

Mama Shugy and one puppy stayed with her mom, and one stayed with her.

That little guy had a special place in Mary’s heart. From the moment he was born, she knew he was hers.

Looking back, Mary knows that moment at Dollar General was something that left a mark on her heart, sharing:

“I’ll never forget this. It was such a monumental experience… I’m like, ‘Shugy, you hit the jackpot girl.’”

Shugy got lucky, that’s true. But so did Mary. That dog showed up one random day outside a store and ended up bringing something really special into her life.
