San Diego Woman Notices Her Rescue Dog Light Up At Spanish, Then Everything Starts Making Sense
At first, it just looked like a cute reaction, a dog getting excited on a walk for no obvious reason.
But for Michele Ost, that moment didn’t fade like most small things do. Instead, it kept replaying in her mind, as if her rescue dog was trying to tell her something she didn’t quite understand yet.
Michele Ost first noticed something unusual about her rescue dog, Honey, when they passed a group of people speaking Spanish. Honey’s entire demeanor shifted right away.
She perked up, got visibly excited, and even tried to move closer to them, like she suddenly understood something important. That reaction stayed with Ost.
Once they got home, she decided to test it out. She started trying Spanish commands just to see what would happen. And Honey didn’t hesitate, as she said in an interview:
“When I got home, I tried a couple of commands, which the video is a result of. That was my very first time trying the commands in Spanish and she immediately listened!”
In a TikTok video posted on her account @michiedevin, Ost asks Honey to sit using Spanish — “siéntate” — and the dog responds instantly.
Encouraged, she keeps going with more commands, and Honey follows every single one.
At one point, Ost even praises her in Spanish, stunned by how natural it all seems. It was like Honey had been waiting for this language all along.
From that moment on, things clicked into place. Ost started using Spanish regularly with her, and said Honey’s “whole world has lit up.”
Looking back, it actually makes sense. Honey was originally rescued in Mexico as a stray before being adopted from the Humane Society of San Diego during a “clear the shelter” event.
Ost didn’t go in looking for a specific dog. But she remembers being drawn to Honey right away.
She was sitting near the end of one of the shelter’s last rows. The moment they brought her out, Honey jumped up and placed her paws on Ost’s lap without hesitation. Ost shared:
“I sat down on the ground to get down on her level, and she leaned her head right into my heart. In that moment, I knew I could not leave without her.”
At the time, Honey had just come through a serious spay surgery and had nearly passed away afterward. She was “beyond anemic,” but still full of warmth and affection, still wagging her tail.
Now, their story has gone viral, with the TikTok reaching over 2 million views. But for Ost, it’s become something more personal than internet attention.
She grew up attending a Spanish-immersion school in San Diego and became fluent early in life. Over time, though, she stopped using it as much, as she said:
“Unfortunately, I am the only person in my family who speaks Spanish, so I have lost a lot of it because I haven’t been using it much. Adopting Honey and realizing Spanish is her native language has inspired me to begin using it again.”
Now, instead of just a surprising discovery, it feels like something more meaningful for Ost, like Honey didn’t just respond to Spanish, but somehow brought it back into her life too.
And for Honey, it’s simple. She’s home, she’s understood, and she’s right where she’s meant to be, finally speaking the language of someone who was always meant to hear her.
