Ohio Woman Saves An Orphaned Baby Squirrel, Then She Returns With A Surprising Request
Erica saved three tiny squirrels left behind by a tree-cutting crew. One of them, Sarah Connor, decided she never wanted to leave her rescuer’s side.
When an animal trusts you with their life, it is an incredible gift. But when a wild animal trusts you with the lives of their babies, it is nothing short of a miracle.
For a compassionate woman named Erica, this miracle became a daily reality right in her own backyard.
Her special bond with a wild squirrel named Sarah Connor didn’t happen overnight. It took years of patience, love, and a willingness to let nature take its course.
A Nest Left Behind
Four years ago, a tree-cutting crew was working in front of Erica’s house. As they cleared the area, they brought down a tree that held a fragile secret.
Tucked inside the branches was a squirrel’s nest containing three tiny babies. Tragically, the workers simply left the nest in a pile of leaves on the ground.
The helpless siblings, including a little girl Erica would later name Sarah Connor, were completely exposed to the elements.
Stepping In To Help
Erica knew that a mother squirrel would usually return for her babies if she was still alive. She kept a close eye on the nest, hoping the mother was just hiding nearby.
"I tried for four days to reunite the babies with mom," Erica explained. Sadly, four days passed, and the mother never appeared.
Knowing the babies wouldn’t survive on their own, Erica brought them inside and took over the role of mom.
Growing Stronger Every Day
Under Erica’s dedicated care, the three siblings began to thrive. Little Sarah Connor was an especially good eater.
"In three days, she gained 14 grams," Erica recalled proudly. The tiny babies quickly grew into healthy, active juveniles ready to face the world.
After weeks of round-the-clock feedings, the bittersweet day finally arrived to open the door and let them explore the wild.
A Surprising Choice To Stay
Most rehabilitated squirrels immediately run off to establish their own territories. Erica fully expected Sarah Connor and her siblings to disappear into the trees forever.
However, Sarah had a different plan in mind. Instead of leaving the property, she built her very own nest right in Erica’s backyard.
"She would wait for me every day when I got home from work," Erica said, noting how the sweet squirrel would run down the driveway to greet her.
The Little Queen Of The Yard
Now four years old, Sarah Connor has become a permanent fixture in Erica’s life. She is a tough survivor who runs the whole backyard.
Erica affectionately calls her the "little queen" of the property. But despite her wild nature, Sarah is incredibly gentle with her human mom.
Squirrels have sharp claws that can easily scratch, but Sarah has never shown Erica a single ounce of anger or aggression.
Sharing The Gift Of Motherhood
Over the years, Sarah Connor has had a total of five litters of her own. Remarkably, she has chosen to raise all of them in Erica’s backyard.
Her trust in Erica is so profound that she even allows her human rescuer to interact with her during pregnancy.
"She would just let me feel the babies," Erica shared, amazed by the tiny movements she could feel right through Sarah’s belly.
An Unexpected Babysitter
As Sarah’s babies grow, she often utilizes the outdoor enclosure Erica still has set up. There are extra nesting boxes inside that Sarah loves to use.
In a rare display of wild animal behavior, Sarah actually brings her babies to Erica so she can "babysit" them.
Erica jokes that Sarah acts like a "teenage mom," dropping the kids off so she can go do squirrel things, knowing they will have food, water, and warm blankets.
A Cry For Help
The depth of their bond was truly tested when Sarah Connor suffered a severe injury. She had managed to break her arm while caring for three new babies.
Knowing she couldn’t protect them in her condition, Sarah sought out the one person she knew could help. She physically led Erica to her nest.
She then allowed Erica to carefully move the three babies into the safety of the outdoor enclosure.
The Ultimate Trust
Erica kept the babies safe and warm while Sarah’s broken arm had time to heal. It was a beautiful testament to the years of love Erica had poured into the little animal.
"When an animal trusts you with their life that way and with their babies’ lives, I don’t think there’s a greater gift," Erica reflected.
