I recently came across a story that broke my heart. A woman adopted a cat, but soon after, she no longer wanted it.
However, instead of following the adoption agreement and returning the cat to the rescue, she took a drastic step – she decided to have the poor thing euthanized.
Once a stray cat, Anna had already endured much by the time she arrived at Michele’s Rescue in West Michigan. Here she finally found refuge from a harsh street life.
Soon after Anna was taken into the shelter, she gave birth to five tiny kittens. Despite her challenges, she remained sweet, affectionate, and full of love.
It wasn’t long before an older woman came to Michele’s Rescue and met Anna. The connection seemed instant, and this lady decided to adopt her.
The shelter staff was hopeful; the woman seemed like a good fit, and with the adoption contract signed, Anna found a new home.
That contract was clear: if for any reason things didn’t work out, Anna would be returned to the rescue. It was a safety net to ensure no cat would be abandoned or worse.
However, just a few weeks later, things took a dark turn. The rescue staff received a distressing call from a local vet clinic, a call that sent shivers down their spine…
As it turned out, the vets had received a disturbing request from Anna’s adopter: they were asked to put Anna down.
The reason behind this drastic decision was even more shocking than anyone could have imagined. Anna’s adopter was frustrated simply because Anna had been climbing on the counter and table!
Such behavior is natural for cats; it’s a way for them to explore and feel secure in their environment. However, for this woman, these innocent actions were a problem too big to handle.
She completely ignored the adoption contract and, instead of seeking help or advice, decided to end Anna’s life.
The shelter staff were horrified. Just thinking what could have happened to Anna made their hearts race, as the rescue explained in its Facebook post:
“What kind of monster would do this to an innocent animal? To set an appointment not even 30 days after adoption to have an animal [euthanized] for jumping on the counters?”
The rescuers immediately intervened, rushing to the woman’s home to retrieve Anna and bring her back to safety.
When Anna returned, she was still the same affectionate, loving cat. Despite everything, she craved human touch and affection, grateful to be in a place where she was cared for.
Now, Anna is at the Kentwood PetSmart, waiting for a fresh start. She is eager to find a new loving owner who will appreciate her gentle soul and provide the love and care she truly deserves.
Despite her hardships, Anna’s spirit remains unbroken, and all she needs is a home where she can truly belong.
Anna’s story shows a troubling side of pet adoption. Some people, when faced with challenges, forget the needs of the animals they’ve taken in. Instead of being patient and loving, they treat them like they’re disposable, as the rescue put it:
“Monsters come in many different sizes, shapes and forms. In this case, it was a nice little old lady. Shameful…”
Adopting a pet is more than simply providing a home – it’s about embracing the commitment to care for another living being. Animals like Anna deserve understanding and compassion, not cruel and irreversible actions. Let’s always remember this!
