Chicago Man Reunites With His Dog After He Was Found A Decade Later In Indiana
Ten long years had passed since Pete disappeared from his backyard in Chicago, and his owner, Ed Lighthall, had slowly learned to live with the unanswered questions.
Back then, Ed was convinced something terrible had happened. He believed his poodle mix had been stolen, and the uncertainty never really left him.
Every day brought the same thoughts—where Pete was, whether he was okay, and if they’d ever see each other again.
Then, after a decade of silence, something unbelievable happened.

Pete was suddenly spotted in Hammond, Indiana, about 20 miles away, wandering near a busy street like he had been trying to find his way back all along. Animal control was called, and the little dog, wearing a collar and tags, was safely picked up.
The person who had him didn’t want to keep him, as Laney Bunner of Hammond Animal Control shared in a YouTube video:
“The dog was running loose right here on this very busy corner and was picked up, brought to our establishment… He was wearing a collar and tags, but the tag owner did not want the dog back.”
Thankfully, Pete had a microchip, and the connection back to Ed was made.

After a decade apart, fate finally brought them back together.
When Ed heard the news, disbelief turned into overwhelming joy. Ten years of longing and hoping had led to this perfect moment, and seeing Pete again felt almost surreal. Ed shared:
“I’m still on a cloud. This is unbelievable… I’m happy. And I feel like he’s happy, and my whole family’s happy. Everybody I know is happy about this.”

Adjusting hasn’t been instant. Pete is older now, a little slower, and some things have changed, as Ed explained:
“He’s a lot older than when I last saw him, so I’m adjusting to that part.. His energy level, all those things, but he’s happy, he’s healthy.”
But the heart of his playful, affectionate personality is still the same. Time apart didn’t matter; they picked up right where they left off. What mattered most was that Pete was finally home, safe and loved.

Ed’s gratitude extends to the animal control team, who cared for Pete and never gave up. He said:
“I am so thankful to those folks at animal control. They got me my dog back.”
Now, he’s planning a little celebration with cake and can’t wait to finally introduce Pete to his daughters, who were just kids when he went missing.

Pete’s story just goes to show that life can surprise you when you least expect it.
Ten years apart couldn’t break the bond between Ed and his pup, and now every cuddle, walk, and waggy tail proves some connections last forever.
It’s a sweet reminder that if you keep hoping and never give up, amazing things can happen, even after a decade.
