Chicago Marathon Takes Unexpected Turn When Runner Spots Tiny Kitten On The Route
Sarah Bohan began the Chicago Marathon with a clear goal: challenge herself, chase a new personal record, and cross the finish line knowing she had given everything.
For most of the race, that plan stayed the same. Then, around mile 21, something unexpected pulled her focus away from the course ahead.
Near the side of the route was a tiny kitten, curled low to the ground and completely out of place. In that moment, the race stopped being only about finishing.
The little cat looked lost and terrified. Its fur was tangled, its body small and vulnerable against the chaos of a busy race route.
Without hesitation, Sarah stopped running. In that split second, finishing fast no longer mattered. The only goal that counted was helping the frightened kitten and making sure it was safe.
As reported by CBS Chicago, Sarah and another runner scooped up the kitten and carried it for more than a mile.
Even though she knew stopping might cost her the record she’d trained for, her instincts took over. Deep down, she just knew she couldn’t leave the little one behind, as she shared:
“It was a tiny kitten, the fur was matted, and I think something just clicked and I was like this is more important right now. And I remember being like ‘But your PR is gonna go out the window, you’re not gonna be able to make it.’ It was just an instinct. I think that’s human instinct at that point.”
It’s one of those moments where your heart makes the decision for you.
Sarah carried the kitten through the crowd until she spotted a spectator standing on the sidelines, watching the marathon. She approached her and asked if she could help.
Thankfully, the woman agreed to take the kitten in and give it a home. That woman turned out to be Andrea Maldonado, who was there to cheer for runners with her family.
She never expected to adopt a pet that day, but fate clearly had other plans.
Sarah finished the marathon three hours, 31 minutes, and 13 seconds after she started. Maybe it wasn’t the record-breaking finish she’d hoped for, but certainly one of the most meaningful runs of her life.
The tiny kitten found the loving home it desperately needed thanks to Andrea and PAWS Chicago, a local rescue group that Sarah was already supporting through her run.
Andrea took one look at the scared, matted kitten Sarah handed her and knew she couldn’t say no.
PAWS Chicago’s CEO, Susanna Wickham, was deeply touched by Sarah’s compassion.
She praised her for representing the true spirit of the organization, not just raising awareness for homeless animals, but stepping up in the most unexpected moment to save one.
When PAWS connected with Andrea later, they learned that the kitten had already settled in perfectly.
Andrea’s home is a lively place she affectionately calls her “farmhouse.” With her son, three daughters, two cats, and a dog, her house is full of love and energy.
And now, one more lucky kitten has joined the fun. Her brother suggested the name Casper, and everyone agreed, it suited the little white fluffball perfectly.
It’s funny how life works sometimes. Sarah was running to raise awareness for animals in need, and out of nowhere, she found herself rescuing one right in the middle of the race.
Casper found his forever home that day, and Sarah gained a story she’ll remember forever.
Fate brought Sarah and Casper together in the most unexpected way, showing that when compassion leads the way, beautiful things can happen, even in the middle of a marathon.
