New York Woman Hears Her Dogs Barking At The Dock And Rushes Over To Find Out Why

It was an ordinary day on Long Island until a few persistent barks changed everything.

A homeowner in Freeport, New York, noticed her dogs acting strangely. They wouldn’t stop barking toward a floating dock behind her home, as if they knew something wasn’t right.

When she went to investigate, she was surprised by what she found.

A soaking-wet opossum was stranded on the dock with nowhere to go.

Knowing the animal needed help, the homeowner contacted the Freeport Police Department, who then reached out to local wildlife rescuer Karenlynn Stracher.

As soon as Stracher heard what was happening, she grabbed her equipment and headed over.

The homeowner explained that she’d only discovered the opossum because of her dogs’ unusual behavior. Stracher later suspected the animal had accidentally fallen into the canal.

Unable to climb the steep sides, he likely hauled himself onto the floating dock to escape the cold water only to find himself trapped there instead. Stracher shared in an interview:

“I was really grateful that this woman’s dogs alerted her to his presence. He probably would have frozen without any shelter.”

Walking toward the dock, Stracher finally saw him. The little opossum was drenched and exhausted, curled up in a tiny patch of sunlight.

He appeared to be asleep, likely trying to warm himself after spending time in the chilly canal. It was a heartbreaking sight.

Stracher moved carefully, using a large rescue net to gently pull the opossum away from the edge of the dock. Once she had him safely contained, she wrapped him in a soft blanket to help him start warming up.

Back in a safe place, she examined him more closely. Thankfully, there were no major injuries. The opossum was simply exhausted and suffering from hypothermia after his ordeal.

Stracher gave him fresh water, a nutritious meal, and most importantly, time to rest in the warmth. Little by little, the tired animal began to perk up.

Before long, he was acting like himself again — alert, active, and clearly eager to get back to the life he’d nearly lost.

That same evening, as dusk settled in, Stracher took him to a local park for one final step. She placed his carrier on the ground and quietly opened the door.

For a moment, the opossum hesitated. Then he hurried into the underbrush, disappearing back into the wild where he belonged.

For Stracher, it was another reminder of how important small acts of kindness can be.

If the homeowner’s dogs hadn’t sounded the alarm, no one knows how the story would have ended. Instead, one cold and frightened animal got exactly what he needed, a second chance and a safe trip home.
