A Homeless Pregnant Dog Found in an Alley Learns How to Play After Saving Her Puppies

When a heavily pregnant dog was rescued from a cold alleyway, her foster caregiver set up a safe space for her to give birth. After weeks of being the perfect mother, the sweet dog named Kaya finally learned how to play and is now ready for her own forever home.

For a heavily pregnant dog living on the streets, survival is a daily battle. Fortunately for one sweet dog, a rescuer’s friend spotted her wandering in an alleyway and managed to catch her just in time.

Her foster caregiver stepped in immediately, welcoming the expectant mother into a warm, safe home. "I don’t think she had ever been inside of a house," her foster parent recalled. "I think that she just knew automatically that she was safe."

To prepare for the big day, the caregiver set up a blue plastic kiddie pool as a whelping box. Day after day, they sat together in the pool, helping the expectant mother get acclimated as her belly grew larger and her stomach began making "seriously funny noises."

Exactly seven days after arriving at her foster home, the sweet mama dog went into labor. She gave birth to her first puppy in the evening and continued delivering a new pup almost every hour until seven o’clock the next morning.

"That was a long night," her foster caregiver shared. "She was amazing. This girl’s a pro."

While one puppy sadly got stuck in the birth canal and did not survive, six healthy little puppies made it. For weeks, the devoted mother refused to leave her babies’ side, staying nestled in the plastic pool while her foster parent brought her food and water.

As the weeks went by, the puppies grew, opened their eyes, and began exploring their surroundings. It was during this playful stage that something beautiful happened to the mother dog, whom her foster parent named Kaya.

Kaya had likely never experienced a normal puppyhood herself, but watching her own babies helped her understand how to have fun. "I think she really learned how to play with toys by just watching her pups play with toys," her caregiver observed.

By nine or ten weeks, Kaya’s behavior shifted from constant, protective nurturing to pure play. She chased her puppies around the house, running and sliding across the floors as they transitioned from tiny pups into energetic young dogs.

The puppies stayed with Kaya until they were 16 weeks old, at which point they began finding their forever homes. With her maternal duties successfully completed, Kaya finally had the space to just focus on being a dog.

Her foster caregiver describes her as absolutely fantastic—she loves people, follows her humans around like a puppy, and loves going for long walks. Because she is highly protective of her space and reactive to other dogs, Kaya needs to be the only pet in her future home.

Now being championed by MCP Rescue in Illinois, the four-to-five-year-old dog is looking for an in-state adoption. Her foster parent hopes she finds a loving family with children who can match her happy, playful spirit and give this devoted mother the pampered life she deserves.
