New York Pit Bull Surrendered With Scars Shows Her Foster Mom Exactly Who She Really Is

A backyard breeding survivor with scars on her legs was surrendered to a city shelter. When her nervous new foster mom finally met her, the sweet dog proved that love can conquer a dark past.

A Heartbreaking History

When Maria agreed to foster a rescue dog named Pretty, she admitted she was a little on edge. She had never owned a pit bull before, and she knew she needed to be cautious.

Given the dog’s unknown past, Maria planned to take things very slowly. She wanted to respect the dog’s boundaries and give her plenty of space to decompress.

An Unexpected Greeting

Knowing all this, Maria braced herself for a shut-down, terrified dog. But when Pretty stepped out of the transport car, she didn’t even pause to sniff her new foster mom.

"After that initial concern went away, which was all bias and not true because of the reputation pit bulls have, I immediately was like, oh my gosh, she would never do anything to hurt me," Maria explained.

Obviously, with fostering, Maria knew she still needed to go slow and respect the dog’s boundaries. But Pretty made it incredibly easy.

To this day, Maria has never had a single issue with Pretty acting out toward her or anyone else. She realized that Pretty just wanted to be loved.

Despite everything she had been through, Pretty harbored no ill will toward people. In fact, she had absolutely zero fear of humans.

Maria joked that her lack of "stranger danger" was almost concerning. She trusted everyone she met instantly.

"Like literally someone could take her and she’d be like, ‘All right, let’s go,’" Maria laughed. It was a beautiful testament to the dog’s forgiving spirit.

A Lingering Fear

While Pretty adored humans, her tragic past still haunted her in one specific way. She was absolutely terrified of other dogs.

Whenever she saw another dog, she refused to go anywhere near them. Because of this deep-seated fear, Pretty didn’t have any dog friends.

For Maria, it was a sad reminder of the trauma the gentle dog had survived before finding safety. Her scars were both physical and emotional.

Facing Misconceptions

A DNA test later confirmed that Pretty was a 100% purebred pit bull. Unfortunately, that label meant she still faced judgment from the outside world.

When Maria walked her, she often saw people crossing the street or pulling their children close. The stigma surrounding her breed was still very real.

Maria understood the reaction, but she knew there was no reason for anyone to fear her sweet girl. Pretty was nothing but a gentle giant.
