Roux the two-legged cat lost her home because she couldn’t bury her waste. But when a veterinary worker heard her story, everything changed.

People surrender their pets for all kinds of reasons, but some explanations are truly hard to comprehend.

For one special-needs cat named Roux, losing her home came down to something she had absolutely no control over.

Roux was born without her front legs, making her a rare and striking two-legged feline.

Despite her physical differences, she was a sweet soul who just wanted a family to love her.

But instead of receiving extra compassion, she found herself surrendered to a local shelter.

Jackie, a woman who works at a veterinary clinic, received a call about the unusual surrender.

She learned that the shelter had just taken in a two-legged cat, and the reason for the surrender left her stunned.

Roux had been given up simply because she couldn’t bury her waste in the litter box.

“Which is heartbreaking because she does try every time,” Jackie explained.

Knowing how vulnerable this little cat was, Jackie knew she couldn’t just leave her sitting in a shelter cage.

A Soft Landing Pad

That very night, Jackie made the decision to bring the special-needs cat home.

She wanted to make sure Roux felt as safe and comfortable as possible in her new environment.

Jackie carefully set up a dedicated room for her, placing down a thick layer of blankets and pillows.

She padded all the hard surfaces, worrying that the two-legged cat might struggle to get around or accidentally hurt herself.

But Roux was about to prove that she was far more capable than anyone realized.

Defying All Expectations

It didn’t take long for Roux to completely surprise her new caretakers.

Instead of being fragile or timid, she was incredibly active and determined.

“She jumps on the couches, she jumps on the beds,” her new dad, Curtis, shared. “Nothing really stops her.”

Roux even figured out how to scale her furniture, managing to get all the way up to the top of her cat tower.

Seeing her navigate the world with such confidence was nothing short of inspiring.

Falling In Love

Roux’s independent spirit quickly won over both Jackie and Curtis.

They loved watching her do normal cat things, like “scratching” surfaces with her little nubs.

They even encouraged the behavior, noting that she was perfectly happy and wasn’t causing any damage.

“I think that made me really fall in love with her, that she was such a capable, independent little girl,” Jackie said.

What started as a temporary arrangement was rapidly shifting into something permanent.

A Change Of Plans

When Jackie first brought Roux home, the plan was just to give her a safe place to land.

“Originally, I maybe was thinking that we might foster her,” Jackie admitted.

But as they watched Roux thrive in their home, they realized they couldn’t imagine their lives without her.

Jackie and Curtis looked at each other and came to the same conclusion.

“This is our baby,” they decided, officially making Roux a permanent part of their family.

A Terrifying Turn

Just as Roux was settling into her perfect new life, her resilience was tested in a terrifying way.

She went in for a dental procedure under anesthesia on a Tuesday, which seemed to go fine at first.

But by the very next day, she began showing signs of severe discomfort.

She developed serious gastrointestinal issues and began profusely vomiting.

Her condition rapidly deteriorated, and her new parents rushed her to the hospital.

Fighting Through The Night

At the hospital, the veterinarians delivered frightening news: Roux had gone into septic shock.

Jackie and Curtis stayed by her side at the hospital all night, terrified that their sweet girl might not survive.

But the medical team refused to give up on her.

The critical care doctor called Jackie with a reassuring promise: “I’ve got this. I’m going to take care of your baby.”

They immediately began administering tons of fluids and antibiotics to help her fight the infection.

The Perfect Mindset

Thanks to the tireless work of the veterinary team and Roux’s own fighting spirit, she miraculously made a full recovery.

Jackie believes that the challenges Roux faces every single day gave her the strength she needed to survive the illness.

Today, Roux is back home, surrounded by a family that loves her exactly the way she is.

She continues to jump, climb, and play, proving that a physical difference doesn’t have to hold you back.

“I think it just goes to show that, you know, if you have the right mindset, you’re capable of doing anything,” Jackie said.
