Ohio Kitten Dragging His Back Legs Gets A Creative Solution That Changes His Life Forever
A tiny kitten named Gelato couldn’t use his back legs, but a creative medical team and a custom set of wheels changed his life forever.
A Dangerous Discovery

When a tiny kitten named Gelato and four of his siblings were discovered running in a road near some cat food, their future was incredibly uncertain.
They were scooped up and brought to Cincinnati Animal Care, hoping for a second chance at a safe life.
While the other kittens were moving around normally, shelter staff quickly realized that little Gelato was struggling.
He was using his front legs to pull himself forward, but his back legs were dragging behind him.
A Heartbreaking Diagnosis

The shelter’s medical team immediately stepped in to evaluate the tiny feline.
After running some tests, they discovered the heartbreaking reason behind his mobility issues: Gelato had experienced a spinal injury.
Despite his physical limitations, the tiny kitten had a massive personality.
Mallory Smith, who works at the agency and stepped up to foster Gelato, described him as a “spunky little guy.”
The Need To Play

Like any other kitten his age, Gelato had a strong desire to explore his surroundings.
He wanted to run around, play with toys, and be active, but his injured spine held him back.
“I wanted to give him some autonomy,” Smith explained.
The team knew they had to find a way to let this spirited kitten be a normal baby.
A Creative Solution

Without a tiny wheelchair on hand, the medical team decided to get creative.
They gathered cardboard, tape, zip ties, rulers, and a set of Hot Wheels toy car wheels.
Using these everyday items, they built a custom, makeshift wheelchair perfectly sized for Gelato’s little body.
Suddenly, the kitten could zoom around and play just like he always wanted.
Stealing Hearts Online

Once Gelato was strapped into his new wheels, the shelter shared his picture on social media.
The internet instantly fell in love with the determined kitten, and his photos began popping up everywhere.
Smith noted that while this isn’t the first time the shelter has used invention to help animals, the attention Gelato received was incredibly special.
“The medical team here is extremely empathetic and caring for the animals, and love to the point of invention a lot of the times,” she said.
A High-Tech Upgrade

As Gelato continued to grow, his cardboard and Hot Wheels cart needed an upgrade.
Thankfully, an engineer friend of Smith’s stepped in to help the growing kitten.
They designed and 3D-printed a brand new set of wheels for him.
The new device is much sturdier and can be adjusted as he gets bigger.
Inspiring Progress

The mobility devices have done wonders for Gelato’s physical strength and confidence.
Now, even when he is taken out of his wheelchair, he is able to stand on his own for short periods of time.
While he still can’t take steps or run without his wheels, his progress has been nothing short of amazing.
“I have always loved fostering, and with him, it’s definitely been inspiring,” Smith shared.
Looking To The Future

It has been about a month since Gelato first arrived at Cincinnati Animal Care with a broken body.
Thanks to a dedicated medical team, a loving foster mom, and some clever engineering, his life has completely transformed.
Smith believes the resilient kitten will be ready to find his permanent home in just a couple of weeks.
For now, he is happily rolling into his future, proving that a little creativity can go a long way in saving a life.
