Alberta Rescue Volunteer Sees Photo Of Unwanted Senior Cat And Gives Her A Beautiful Second Chance

When a senior cat with frostbitten paws was passed over by fosters, one volunteer stepped up to give her the warm retirement home she deserved.

For quite a while, nobody wanted to foster the senior cat.

She was found trying to survive the bitter cold of Alberta, where temperatures can plummet to a dangerous negative 30 degrees.

Rescuers believe she originally had an owner who let her go, leaving the older cat to fend for herself in the freezing elements.

By the time someone found her and brought her to a local shelter, she was suffering from severe frostbite on all of her paws.

A Picture Changes Everything

Allie, a foster volunteer, was scrolling through updates from her local rescue when a specific photo caught her eye.

It was the senior cat, looking incredibly scared but undeniably sweet.

"I instantly felt a connection with her," Allie shared with GeoBeats.

Knowing that older animals are often overlooked, Allie decided right then that this cat, later named Poppy, was meant to come home with her.

Making Herself At Home

Typically, Allie takes her time introducing a new foster cat to the house.

She prefers a slow transition to help them decompress from shelter life.

But Poppy was different. She was so remarkably comfortable right away that Allie let her roam freely.

The senior cat absolutely loved being indoors again, soaking up the warmth and safety of a real home.

Healing And Health

Despite her rough time outdoors, Poppy was generally in great shape.

However, she did need a little bit of medical support for her aging body.

Allie began helping her slowly lose some extra weight, which is a careful, long process for a senior cat.

She also started receiving injections for arthritis to help soothe her joints and keep her moving comfortably.

A Love For Being Held

It didn’t take long for Poppy’s affectionate personality to shine through.

She quickly learned how to ask for attention, gently pawing at Allie whenever she wanted to be picked up.

Once in Allie’s arms, Poppy is completely content to just be carried around the house.

"She could probably be carried around for hours," Allie noted. "She just loves to be held."

A Grandmother’s Spirit

As they spent more time together, Allie noticed something incredibly special about Poppy’s demeanor.

The sweet cat reminded Allie of her own grandmother.

While Allie was used to being the caretaker for her fosters, Poppy seemed to reverse the roles.

The senior cat was always watching Allie, following her around, and making sure her human was okay.

The Third Foster

Poppy was only Allie’s third foster cat.

When Allie started volunteering, she never intended to actually adopt the cats she brought home.

Her goal was always to provide a temporary safe haven until they found their perfect forever families.

But as Poppy slowly blended right into the family, it became clear that she was already exactly where she belonged.

Safe For The Rest Of Her Life

Allie officially adopted Poppy, giving the senior cat the permanent "retirement home" she so deeply deserved.

Looking back at the hardships Poppy endured in the freezing cold, Allie wishes she could apologize for the unfairness of her past.

But more importantly, she wants Poppy to know that she will never have to face that kind of suffering again.

Today, Poppy is safe, warm, and endlessly loved for the rest of her life.
