It took six years of patience, a custom-built outdoor house, and countless bowls of food for a feral cat named Mona to finally decide she was ready to step indoors.

For most outdoor cats, a warm house is a luxury they would gladly accept in a heartbeat. But for a wary stray named Mona, crossing the threshold of a home was a monumental leap of faith.

It took an incredible six years for Mona to finally step inside.

The story all started one day during the height of the pandemic. A man looked out into his garden and spotted an unexpected visitor.

The stray cat was busy climbing trees and going after birds in the yard. It was a surprising sight for the homeowner, who openly admitted, “I was not a cat fan.”

Labeled “Too Feral” To Adopt

It quickly became apparent that this garden visitor was not a lost house pet. She was incredibly skittish and deeply distrustful of human contact.

When local rescue efforts were made, the verdict on the little cat was heartbreaking. “Mona was too feral,” is what they told the homeowner.

Because she was deemed unadoptable, she couldn’t be placed in a traditional home. They had no choice but to put her right back in the backyard where she was found.

The homeowner was now left with a wild cat living permanently on his property. Despite his initial feelings about cats, he couldn’t just ignore the vulnerable animal.

For some reason he couldn’t quite explain, the homeowner started putting food out for the stray. “Maybe I felt sorry for her, I don’t know,” he recalled.

But Mona was not ready to be friends. Whenever the man stepped outside, the timid cat would immediately run away and hide.

Realizing that forcing interactions wouldn’t work, the homeowner changed his approach. He decided to let the cat set the pace.

He would simply sit out in the backyard and wait. He hoped that his quiet, non-threatening presence would eventually show Mona she was safe.

A Tiny Breakthrough On The Deck

The waiting game required immense patience, but it eventually paid off. One day, Mona bravely came up onto the deck while her caretaker was outside.

The man gently put his hand out, not knowing how the feral cat would react. To his absolute shock, Mona leaned in and bumped his hand.

“Oh, you’re being friendly today,” the homeowner whispered to the sweet “cutie pie.”

It was a massive milestone, but the homeowner learned very quickly that everything had to be on Mona’s terms. At that point, he resigned himself to a simple thought: “Okay, she wants to be outside forever.”

A Custom House Ignored

As the seasons changed, the harsh reality of outdoor life set in. When winter came, the homeowner became deeply worried about Mona’s safety in the freezing temperatures.

Determined to keep the cat safe, he spent the entire next summer building a custom outdoor cat house. It was designed to offer warmth and protection from the elements.

He proudly placed the shelter in the yard, hoping Mona would appreciate the cozy upgrade. Instead, the stubborn cat completely ignored it.

Despite the hard work that went into building the refuge, Mona simply wasn’t ready to use it. The homeowner had to wait and hope she would eventually change her mind.

Seeking Shelter From The Rain

The turning point for the outdoor shelter came during the following winter. The weather had taken a nasty turn, and a cold rain was falling.

The homeowner looked out his window to check on the feral cat. He was relieved to see that Mona, likely beaten from being outside in the cold, had finally sought refuge.

There she was, safely tucked inside the little house. It was a huge relief to know the cat was finally protected from the freezing rain.

This small acceptance of shelter was a sign that Mona was slowly dropping her guard. She was beginning to realize that the things this human provided were actually meant to help her.

Crossing The Threshold

By the third year of their relationship, Mona’s confidence had grown significantly. She was no longer just a distant garden cat; she was a regular presence near the home.

One day, Mona appeared right by the back door. The homeowner cautiously opened it, not expecting what happened next.

To his absolute amazement, the feral cat stepped inside. “I couldn’t believe my eyes,” the homeowner recalled of that magical moment.

It was a massive leap of faith for a cat who had spent her entire life avoiding human spaces. But her transition to indoor life was still going to take a little more time.

Forever Safe Inside

At first, Mona treated the house like a temporary hotel. Every night she would come inside to sleep, but by 6:00 in the morning, she would cry to go back out.

But one year, everything changed. Mona stopped crying to go outside, finally deciding that the warm, safe indoors was exactly where she belonged.

“I guess she recognized that I’ll take care of her,” the homeowner noted. Looking back at the feral cat who used to run away, it’s truly hard to believe how far sweet Mona has come.
