Georgia Wildlife Rehabber Raises Orphaned Raccoon, Then A Cat Leads Her To Her True Calling

When an orphaned baby raccoon arrived at a wildlife rehabilitator’s home, she just wanted to be held. But as she grew, a special bond with an outdoor cat helped her find her true calling in the wild.

When Penelope was brought to her new foster home, she was just a helpless baby.

A lovely couple had found the tiny raccoon and quickly realized she was completely alone.

With no mother in sight, they knew she needed specialized care to survive.

They brought the two-month-old orphan to a local wildlife rehabilitator, hoping she could give the little raccoon a fighting chance.

Seeking Comfort And Hugs

From the moment she settled in, Penelope showed an incredibly affectionate personality.

While every raccoon is different, this little orphan craved constant physical connection with her rescuer.

She would literally wrap her little paws around her caretaker’s neck, pulling her in for a gentle hug.

Whenever she felt scared or unsure, she would immediately run straight back to her human mom for safety.

Penelope’s desire to be close wasn’t just limited to the house.

Whenever her caretaker went for a drive, the little raccoon insisted on coming along.

She would happily perch right on her human’s shoulder, taking in the sights from the passenger seat.

It was clear that, for the time being, this baby raccoon felt entirely safe in the human world.

Growing Up Fearless

As she grew, Penelope spent most of her time inside the house, surrounded by a bustling family.

She was introduced to the household cats and a dog, and to everyone’s surprise, she showed absolutely no fear.

To Penelope, the other pets were just fun toys, and she happily made them part of her daily games.

She also formed a deep, sibling-like bond with her caretaker’s daughter, spending hours wrestling and playing together.

The Teenage Phase Begins

As sweet as baby raccoons are, they eventually hit a mischievous teenage phase.

Penelope’s caretaker noted that the minute they turn into teenagers, it becomes an entirely different ball game.

If the growing raccoon didn’t feel she was getting enough attention, she would always find a creative way to demand it.

Her wild instincts were slowly starting to wake up, and the house could no longer contain all of her energy.

A Glimpse Of The Great Outdoors

Over time, Penelope began showing a keen interest in the world beyond the front door.

Sensing her curiosity, her caretaker slowly started taking her outside to explore.

In the beginning, the great outdoors was overwhelming, and Penelope was a little nervous.

She made sure to stay right by her human’s side, cautiously taking in the new sights and smells.

An Unlikely Friendship Blooms

Everything changed the day Penelope was introduced to the family’s outdoor cat, Randy.

The two animals instantly hit it off, forming an unexpected and beautiful friendship.

Every single day, they would look forward to meeting up in the yard to play together.

Having a confident feline friend made the outdoors seem far less scary for the growing raccoon.

Tree Climbing And Independence

With Randy by her side, Penelope began to embrace her natural raccoon instincts.

The unlikely duo would race around the yard, climbing high up into the trees and then scurrying back down.

Encouraged by her daily adventures, Penelope eventually started venturing out a little more on her own.

The nervous baby who once clung to her caretaker’s shoulder was finally stepping into her independence.

A Wild Woman Now

Today, Penelope has fully transitioned back into the wild, living as a full-grown, independent woman.

Although her caretaker’s house is full of wild animals, she admits Penelope will always be one of her favorites.

She misses the sweet raccoon who used to hug her neck, but she knows this is exactly where Penelope belongs.

The successful release is the ultimate goal for any wildlife rehabilitator, and Penelope’s story is a beautiful victory.

Signs Of A Happy Life

Even though she lives in the wild, Penelope hasn’t completely forgotten her roots.

Her caretaker knows she still comes back from time to time, mostly to visit her best friend, Randy.

Occasionally, the rehabilitator will step onto the back porch, see random things torn up, and smile, knowing Penelope was there.

The last time she caught a glimpse of her, Penelope was fat, healthy, and thriving—proving she is doing a wonderful job out on her own.
